"Men in Black"
by Sadie Hawkins
Gazette reviewer
Who are the mysterious "men in black"? This movie is
about aliens and government cover-ups, a popular theme
these days in television and movies. It is fast-paced action and
comedy combined, although the comedy side is a little weak.
The plot is somewhat predictable but there are some unex-
pected twists and turns.
Will Smith (better known for his role as the "Fresh
Prince") plays a New York City cop who inadvertently
becomes involved with an alien plot to take over Earth.
Tommy Lee Jones plays Agent K who recruits Smith into the
agency. The headquarters oftbe "Men in Black" is an inter-

stellar customs checkpoint for all aliens arriving and depart-
ing Earth. All aliens living and working on Earth are
monitored to different degrees by the agency.
This movie gives a humorous explanation of the purpose
and operations of these mysterious men. Smith becomes
Agent J, and all records of his existence are wiped out. When
he asks what government agency they report to, Jones replies
"None. They ask too many questions." Who funds the
operation? Jones mumbles something about holding patents
on gadgets such as Velcro and microwave ovens, which were
confiscated from "out-of-state visitors."
Linda Fiorentino has the supporting role of the medical
examiner in the city morgue who autopsies aliens and then has
her memory erased by Jones. Fortunately, there is no time for
a silly romance to develop.
The special effects are incredible, produced by none other
than Industrial Light & Magic under Executive Producer
Steven Spielberg. Tommy Lee Jones does a great job with
this role, even though the script writer sticks him with the old
clich6 "Be there or be square."
Will Smith has spread himself too thin between comedy,
singing and acting. He ought to concentrate on his music
career and leave the acting to the professionals.
Overall, the movie is good. It's definitely worth watching.
There's action, comedy and lots of weird-looking aliens.
