(702) 482.6202 "Weapons of Mass Distraction," Heroless soap opera by Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer "Weapons" is one of those nasty little films in which there are no good guys. If it had been a western nobody would have been allowed to wear a white hat. This adds real difficulty at the involvement level, because the viewer doesn't want to care about any of these people. The story line is about two muckraking media mo- guls, who battle each other with blackmail, bribery, sexual superintendence, and closet cleaning. While the "Monitor" and "Merrimack" of malice fire salvos at each other there is also the story of the average Joe who is a victim of this warfare. Paul Mazursky plays the tragic average guy while Illeana Douglas plays his long suffering wife. Actually Illeana is the most memorable female member of this cast. On the male side there is Gabriel Byrne and Ben Kingsley as the two terrible titans. Both of these actors are excellent in the villainy of there respective roles but there is no good to make there evil appear more wicked. The only set offis between the Paul Mazursky's charac- ter and the deadly duo which becomes a contrast be- twin the powerful and the powedess. If there was ever a film that was crying for a hero this is it. For without that balance the evil loses it edge and viewer figures the only justice will be if the twosome destroy each other in the last reel. But unfortunately justice is not served in "Weapons of Mass Distraction." Rent it and see how much more enjoyable your real world is. =omuw, xaa L Woapo d s Distraction 2. l:roo Wllly 2. [/OIT tl.
