Hiker lost during DV festival

On November 1, during the Death Valley Fall Festival an
organized walk/mountain bike ride was held in Shoshone,
Calif. Paul Gaffan, 63, of Las Vegas became exhausted while
particil;ating in the event and was unable to continue. His
assigned partner, Heather Clock, left him on the trail some-
where southeast of town and went to get help.
Race organizers became concerned when both parties had
not returned to town within a reasonable amount of time.
Organizers and participants retraced the course without find-
ing either party.
At 5:30 p.m. Clock arrived back in Shoshone and con-
tacted race organizers who then notified local emergency
agencies, which included the Southern Inyo Fire Protection
District and lnyo County Sheriffs Department. When Clock
was asked about where she had left Gaffan, she was unable to
locate the area.
Local agencies and volunteers began searching and Inyo
County Search and Rescue Team was called out. Teams
remained in the field all night, eventually locating Gaffan at
7:10 a.m. three and-a-half miles southeast of Shoshone.
Gaffan was in good condition and did not require any medical
attention.
