DOE donates computers to Nye County schools
by Geoff Kreis
PVG Staff
Nye County Schools got a little extra help when the Depart-
ment of Energy (DOE) gi fled 42 computer systems to the school
district on October 23.
The IBM computers are 386's and a86's and were previously
used in the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management.
The computers were gifted through a Memorandum of Under-
standing between the DOE and the Nye County School District.
For the next three months the DOE is going to send computers
to 10 different counties adjacent to the Yucca Mountain Project
site in. Nevada and California. As of now the DOE has provided
over 700 computers to these neighboring school districts.
"We have given out better computers to the schools," said
DOE Spokesman Erik Olds. "The computers are upgraded and
have hard drives, printers, Windows, and other materials that the
kids need today."
The donations are part of DOE's math and science girl
program intended to increase the numbers of students seeking
careers in the scientific and technical fields.
As of yet, the computers in Nye County haven't been sent to
any particular schools according to DOE officials. The district
does have them stored in warehouses in Las Vegas and they are
scheduled to be in schools soon.
