Chronicling Dreamland Finally, after a week of anticipation, my advance copy of "Area 51 - The Dreamland Chronicles" arrived. To put it simply, it was worth the wait. The author, David Darlington, weaves the history, social effects and myths of "Dreamland" into a colorful tapestry. Agent 0 As the mist clears from the blast, a silhouette emerges. For those of you who don't know, "Dreamland" also known as "Area 51/' "Groom Lake," etc...resides 70 miles north by northeast of Pahrump, on the eastern edge of the Nevada Test Site -- and is the United States' premier test facility for top secret military aircraft. From early 1955 to the present, Darlington's chronology covers everything you wanted to know about America's favorite secret base. Including how and why it was built, to the plethora of secret aircraft that were developed and tested there. This is by far the best written account of the early years at Area 5 I. You can likewise look forward to a journey through the Twilight Zone. This hardcover also touches on the conspiracy theories, wild rumors and the implausible tales that have erupted around this secret testing facility. The thread that binds the wealth of information contained within Darlington's work, is the people. Extensive interviews Briefs f -- A book review and quotes from an eclectic cross-section of society, bring feeling and texture to the 281 pages. I met Dave Darlington a few years ago while he was researching this book, and we have shared many an adventure since that time. He's a rugged outdoorsman, as well as a consummate journalist and author -- the perfect person to do the definitive study of Area 51. "Area 51 - The Dreamland Chronicles," is a wonderful collection of truths and oddi- ties from southern Nevada. To quote the publisher: "...(it) speaks volumes about popu- lar culture and American de- mocracy at the end of the twentieth century." If you've ever wondered what goes on out there on the Nellis Range, then this book is for you. If you've ever wondered "WHY?" someone would care, this book's for you as well -- it has some- thing for everyone.
