6 Thursday, October 30, 1997 Pahrump Valley Gazette aluLlaty split---may be dla than reah'ze00 Last week's column really hit a nerve with more than a few people. It is perhaps the most commented on column that I've ever written. You have no idea how many people out there support splitting the county. Not just the ordinary John Does either. Some county "movers and shakers" strongly support such a move. It started in the north after Payrump began to make a move for "at large" voting of the commissioners. Bad move, Payrump. The next move by those who support such a ludicrous project will be for Payrump to get the county seat away from Tonopah. Watch for it. Too late. Too late. The move is on. The north has had their fill. Oh, others in the south also, such as, Amargosa Valley. The new "school tax" is another straw that helped to load up the camel's back. Commissioners kicked it back to the school board to rework it to become a county-wide tax instead of just Payrump. Humph. I'm working on a few items about the school board. Just wait and see. We've got some real beauties out there. This was Cameron McRae's idea. Send it back to the school board and have them rework it for the entire county. Well, Payrump's commissioners are doing a fine job m for Payrump. Geez, just wait until a//the commissioners are from Payrump. You ain't seen nothin' yet. I hope that Cam decides to run for office again. He's been on the back burner in this column for all too long. I neglected to indicate a plan that some people are trying to work out in my column last week. It was very quickly brought to my attention and I'll give you the gist of it here. A lot of folks in Esmeralda would like to see Nye County split and then the northern half (from about Beatty on up) join with Esmeralda to form a new county. Esmeralda is in pretty rough shape and it might just be the answer for them. There's only one problem with this plan. The folks in Nye County towns such as Amargosa, Crystal, Beatty, don't want any part of Payrump either. They want away from the screaming child down south. If this plan makesit to paper it will be interesting to see the reaction from these folks. I don't blame them for feeling that way. I sure don't want to see Crystal be broken offwith Payrump. Oh, there's another piece of inside advice I received this week. Regarding legislation to split Nye County not making it into the next legislature n I've now gotten word that the preliminary plans will be introduced that may actually make it possible for the split to occur within the next two/three years. It's gone much further than even I realized and the rolling snowball is gathering momentum. The science ol'legislation is like that .f medici.e in one respect: that it is Jar more easy to poi.t out what will do harm tha. what will do good.
