,xpanding weather radio service
Continued from front page
maintenance, space and power. A projected start-up cost
for this project would run nearly $35,000, McQueen said.
Board Chairwoman Charlotte LeVar suggested that if
this cost were shared with other communities that would
be serviced, the cost for Parhump would go down. McQueen
agreed and said it had been done before.
The range of the frequency would cover areas as far
away as Mesquite, Goldfield and far into Inyo County. Vic
Johnson, an amateur emergency services radio operator
said that what the Potosi site would be is a five state
repeater that could be picked up at long distances given its
location.
Johnson added that the current signal he receives from
the Red Mountain site is not dependable as it cannot be
picked up in some parts of town. In addition to severe
weather updates, the Potosi site would also provide daily
forecasts and quick communication with media and emer-
gency services in the event of emergency situation.
"This is something we really need here in Pahrump,"
Johnson said. "It is probably our cheapest and most reli-
able method of communication for the town and its weather
concerns."
Rainbolt made a motion to appoint Johnson as a com-
mittee of one to work with McQueen and the NWS in
researching options and costs that would be beneficial to
the town. Board member Charlie Gronda seconded.
"We would really like to be able to provide reliable and
accurate weather information to the public here," McQueen
said. "It will be worthwhile in the future."
