Inyo Fire Protection District benefit by Patti Babcock Residents of Shoshone, Tecopa, Death Valley Junction, Charleston View and other nearby areas will be safer following a $50 a plate dinner. The Tecopa Senior Citizen Association hosted the dinner held at Longstreet Casino in Amargosa on Sat- urday, September 27. Association Presi- dent George Gilbert said the proceeds, $1,245, will be used for fire fighter train- ing and equipment for the Southern Iny0 Fire Protection District. Beautifully dressed guests, seated at large round tables, watched the sun set behind the Funeral Mountains while they enjoyed a dinner of prime rib, broiled chicken and fish accompanied by a tasty selection of salads and side dishes. The dessert oozing with whipped cream and strawberries was the perfect grand finale. District Fire Chief, Hank Messer, thanked everyone for their support and introduced the volunteer firefighters. Fire District President Susan Sorrells, of Shoshone, thanked Messer for his service and for helping the diverse areas work together as a community. Gilbert also praised Messer for his fine work as did several area citizens and Death Val- ley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Martha Watkins. As Fire Chief, Messer follows fam- ily tradition. His grandfather was fire chief back in the days when the Tonopah- Tidewater Railroad was operating. Later a cousin served in the position. Another tradition in the area is the Death Valley Junction Opera House rep- resented at the dinner by owner/opera- tors, Marta Beckett and Tom Wilet. They are busy preparing for the 1997-98 sea- son. Renowned ballet star, Beckett, says she is working on a new production to celebrate her thirtieth anniversary at the Opera House. Watkins gave Messer more than praise. Repre- senting Desert Outreach, a volunteer organizatita that helps people in need, Watldnspresenteda$1,000 check to the fire district. She said the money will be used by the fire fighters to purchase meat and supplies for the deep pit barbeque at the Death Valley Fall Fes- tival, November 1-2. The fire department will receive the proceeds from the barbeque.
