Pahrump Valley Gazette, Thursday, Septmnber 11, 1997 21 New Dentist enjoys brisk business by Patti Babcock Gazette Staff Jeff Meckfessel, D.D.S. opened his office in Suite 1 at 2430 Calvada Blvd. on Tuesday, September 2, 1997, and the patients arrived. Office Manager, Karen Jolley, deftly handled the ringing phones (751-5888), entered appointments into the computer and controlled all the chaos inherent in starting up a new practice. Dr. Meckfessel and his two assistants, Diane Johnson and Tammie Gordon, stayed busy taking care of patients' dental needs. At the end of the first week, the pages of Pahrump Family Dental's appointment book are filling up with patients Dr. Meckfessel and his staff look forward to meeting. People calling for an appointment will be pleased to find they can see the Doctor in days or a week or two. A patient in pain will be worked into the schedule, but there may a wait of an hour or tWO. The best way to avoid arriving at the dentist in pain, Dr. Meckfessel says, is to seek help as soon as a problem becomes apparent because it,won't get better. Too often, people procrastinate which only leads to more severe problems with pain', swelling and the need for emergency care. Pahrump Family Dental places a high priority on preven- tive dentistry. The Doctor recommends following the Ameri- can Dental Association's guidelines to have teeth checked every six months. Family is the key word in Dr. Meckfessel's practice. He provides dental care for the entire family from toddler to teenage to middle age and seniors. Care includes cleaning, Master Gardener fillings, oral surgery, crowns, periodontal, and endodontic (root canal). He also fits and fixes dentures. All facets of down to earth, basic, good dentistry are provided at Pahrump Family Dental except orthodontics. The dental office at the south send of the new southwest- ern building on Calvada provides the perfect setting for patients, Doctor and staff. The interior layout, designed by Meckfessel and a friend, reflects careful attention to every detail. A rounded, open re- ception/office area encour- ages communication between patient and staff. Large win- dows in the waiting, exami- nation, and consultation rooms provide light and a comforting feeling of open space. No bottlenecks here. The flow is easy and natural. Pa- tients enter the treatment area on one side of the reception area and exit on the opposite side. The dental hygiene room with two stations is the first area a patient sees. Appoint- ments are being accepted for the dental hygienist who will be joining the staff soon. Moving in a circle are the Doctor's office, an open treatment area with two iden- tical stations. Next is a large sterilization area with the largest autoclave available. Further around the circle are two more identical treatment stations. A surgical room is next. The consultation or quiet room is the last stop before the exit door to the reception area. The plan is carefully executed to provide maximum comfort and efficiency for patients and staff. Dr. Meckfessel had plenty of time to think about the most efficient and pleasing environment for a dental office during his previous seven years in private practice. Meckfessel said he was drawn to dentistry and still is. He says,"I don't like it. I love it. My goal is to be fair and honest and to provide topqual- ity dental care to the commu- uity/' The aspiring dentist left ,. the UniversityofNevadaReno where he was studying bio- chemistry when he was ac- cepted at the University of the Pacific SchoolofDentistry in A Master Gardener will be in the UNR Cooperative Extension Office from 12 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday to answer questions regarding gardening, planting, soil preparation and to discuss general gardening concerns with Pahrump Valley area residents. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in June 1990. He taught at the dental school for a year and a half prior to establishing a private practice in San Mateo and Livermore, California. Seeking a less hectic lifestyle, Meckfessel tried Lake Tahoe and finally Las Vegas where the warmer climate was appealing. The fast pace of Las Vegas soon had the Doctor looking at outlying rural areas. When he discovered Pahr- ump, "'everything just fell into place." Meckfessel, his wife Monica and their son Nicholas, 15 months, love Pahrump. Meckfessel says it offers the lifestyle he and his wife want and a safe environment to raise their son. He plans to maintain his practice here until he retires. One reason, he says, he started with a 2,500 square foot facility. "It gives me plenty of space to grow into rather than out of." Dr. Meckfessel closes the office on weekends to be with his family and to give his staff the same privilege.
