.... ,...--- + Mobile Home fire leaves Pahrump man homeless by Mary Lamar Gazette Staff PAHRUMP Friday. Au- gust 29, a late afternoon fire ignited in a small mobile home. No one appeared to be at home. As the flames in- creased in size, people around the mobile home called the fire department for help. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was completely engulfed in flames. Electrical wires had burned away at the meter. The loose wires began to spark, as they were swinging freely in the wind. This pre- sented serious concerns for the fire department, Chief Vern Long of the Pahrump Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) stated. Valley Electric Associa- tion (VEA) was called to turn the power off that serviced the mobile home. Roy Bell VEA line foreman stated that, as a rule of thumb, they come out and shut down the power to all structure fires. This is a ' courtesy that they provide to the fire department to help protect the lives of the firefighters working at the scene, he said. The firefighters worked to no avail to save the home. The man living at the mobile home was not home at the time of the blaze, he was be- lieved to be a work. There were no otherpeople involved in the fire and no injuries were reported+ The fire com- pletely destroyed the home. The total damage to the mo- bile home, land and personal property was believed to be approximately $40,000 to $45,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall. MDA THE PROMISE TO JERRY'S KIDS - Pahrump Volunteer Firefighters gave until it hurt during last weekend's MDA fundraiser for Jerry's kids. A combination of sore feet and sunburns did not stop these 23 dedicated volunteers from a promise to top last year's numbers. In three days the firefighters collected approximately $7,300 in a total of 20 hours. Lieutenant Eric Murphy (left) and Lieutenant Bret Haynes (right) of PVFD stated they were pleased with this year's numbers. Hayne said. "In the past four years we have collected approximately $18,000. Members of the PVFD attended a check presentation to MDA on Sunday in Las Vegas. The firefighters wanted to thank Pahrump for their generosity and support." Photo by Mary Lamar Ill Illll I 'rue & Thur 7p.m.- 12a.m. Wednesday Spaglaetti Niiht $1.99 Sat.
