'I] "Annie" Always lmusing
by Barney Basin
Gazette Reviewer
Columbia films has recently re-released "Annie" as
part of its Columbia Tristar Family Collection. Whether
this film will be a colossal collectors classic, only time,
a lot of time, will tell. This seems to be one of the studios'
new ways to make money out of not so old films. Re-
release recent releases as classics. Only the correct term
is not re-released it's remastered. Isn't technology won-
derful.
Of course "Annie" does have a lot going for it. It has
cute kids, animals, snappy songs, Carol Btrnett and a
bald-headed Albert Finney. It's also based on a Broad-
way musical which is based on a comic strip. If not
wholly faithful to the original strip story it is at least
faithful to the spirit of the Broadway musical.
If you are one of the dying breed of those who like
movie musicals, you'll like Annie. If you like stories of
children and animals, you'll also like "Annie." If you
just want a story that the whole family can enjoy,
"Annie" will also fill the bill.
The story is about a plucky precocious, person of
non-parentage, Annie, who is invited to spend the week
with billionaire, Oliver Warbuck. In that time she sings
and dances her way in the hearts of the entire Warbuck
staff. In the end the only thing standing between Annie
I
and true happiness is gin guzzling Miss Hannigan and
her money mooching, kidnaping relatives.
Like many films in its class "Annie" is weak on story
but strong on song and character. Those characters
come from performers like Carol Burnett, Albert Finney,
Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters. Aileen Quinn mag-
nificently handles the title role.
For an evening of just plain amusement bring "Annie"
home for the entire family.
