"Cal; Don't Dance," cartoon distant Disney
by Barney Basin
Gazette Reporter
Ever since Disney unveiled feature length ani-
mated films, they have been the standard of excellence
by which all others are judged. So it is with "Cats Don't
Dance." Compared to Buena Vista classic, it pales in
both story and color. It tries to reach all ages by
cameoing celerity caricatures of bygone days in a story
that is told for youngsters.
To say that John Grisham doesn't compare to Wil-
liam Shakespeare, may be true but it doesn't mean that
in his own right Grisham is no less entertaining. That
is also true of this cartoon.
Both of my granddaughters sat through this video
and appeared to be enjoying the show. That is except
the three year old, who won't even sit still long enough
to go to the bathroom.
There were some bits of humor that brought a
chuckle from my adult mind. Colleagues of mine
might seriously question whether I have an adult mind
or not.
The story is about Danny, a cat who sings and
dances like Gene Kelly. The film is dedicated to Mr.
Kelly who died while collaborating on this project.
Danny leaves Kokomo to go and be discovered in
the golden Hollywood of the forties only to discover
that as a cat he is limited by a "species-barrier."
r f %:,-
Humans get the good parts, animals are allowed
only to make their appropriate noises.
It's up to Danny, with the aid of a flouting feminine
feline, and other animal friends to break the barrier and
prove to the world that cats do dance.
Character voices are Scott Bakula as Danny, Jas-
mine Guy as a leading lady cat and Kathy Najimy as a
hilarious hippo.
