NDOT expansion almost completed on US 95 by Mar)' Lamar Gazette Staff A series of accidents have left ambulance crews and Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) concerned for driverflsafety. Officials from the NHP confirm that serious safety prob- lems exist with the current lane restrictions at the intersec- tion of US 95 and Highway 160. US 95 is currently a two-lane highway from Indian Springs to Tonopah and traffic runs at approximately 70 miles per hour. There is no left turn lane at the present time at the Highway 160 intersection. Vehicles must come to a complete stop when turning left if there is southbound traffic. The danger of a vehicle striking another vehicle from the rear is increased, officials reported. There also appears to be some concern at the Highway 373 and Highway 95 intersection. Trooper Steve Harney, -'')Public Relations Officer of Ii-the NHP stated that many accidents have occurred on Highway 160and US 95 o,,er the past five years. Ambulance personnel have been rallying for the road improvement for sev- eral months, andin some in- stancesmuch longer. Now that Nevada Department of Transportation has sta. J their road expansion project, members of the ambulance services feel that this will be a tremendous improvement over current conditions. Concerned ambulance per- sonnel also stated that much more is needed to insure safety at US 95 and High- way 160. Michael DeLee of recycling there will be an overlay process. More asphalt will be added to the shoulders providing additional safety for drivers. The road will be wideneand a left turn lane will be added. Additional signage will be included on US 95. There are no blinking lights to be added at this time, nor are there any signs with arrows to be placed on Highway 160, but officials did report that highway projects are ongoing and that improvements will continue. DeLee said that this has been a long battle but with the new improvements to US 95 underway, and hopefully, more projects in the near future, it will be worth all the time and effort that everyone has spent to help prevent any additional loss of life. Amargosa stated we have had "strong public support for a blinking light or a re- flective sign with two ar- rows on Highway 160 and US 95 that indicates that there is cross traffic ahead. These items would help in- sure the safety of the public and hopefully reduce fatali- ties each year." Many people in the community TRAFFIC DELAYS: At the intersection of US 95 and Highway 160, road expansions are under way with plans for a left hand turn lane. It is anticipated that construction will be completed by mid September. have had grave concerns re- gardihg the problems at US 95 and Highway 160. A left turn lane for northbound traf- fic and a deceleration lane for southbound traffic are just two things that mem- bers of the Amargosa Vol- unteer Ambulance crew are currently worried about hav- ing corrected, officials re- ported. NDOT started the US 95 project in May, and by June they actually began construc- tion on the project using as a starting point. The expansion project ends approximately 5/8 mile North of Highway 160. This is a 60-day project and will be completed approximately mid September, Jeanne Corcoran, public information's officer of NDOT reported. The repair work that will be performed is called aold recycle. Corcoran explained that the old asphalt is re- moved, then recycled and re- applied.
