helped, Frank Nasar, Pumpkin, Marie Reagle, Chris Filter,
and Mary K for all her wonderful baked goods. If anyone has
been missed, sorry.

Once again we enjoyed having Phyllis Sorhouet with us
stressing the workings of con artists against the senior popu-
lation. Phyllis will be coming by regularly, keeping our
seniors updated on the necessary precautions we must take to
protect ourselves from physical and mental abuse and harass-
ment.
Our guests this week were Esther Lewis, Mary and Jack
Fields of Tonopah, Alice Boni from Pahrump and Craig
Philip who has just moved to Tonopah from Las Vegas. We
always enjoy having visitors and hope they will come by more
often.
Thank you to all you wonderful people who have been
sharing your garden veggies and fruit with us. Angelo and
Inez Ciarlantini, tomatoes and cucumbers; Sam and Linda
Parsons, green beans; Carl Newberry, grapes; tomatoes from
Preston Causey, and cucumbers from Jack and Mary Fields.
We do appreciate your support and the seniors really enjoy
these fresh foods. Thanks again.

Special thanks to Lane Schultz for the gift of fish (tuna)
recently given to the senior center. We're so glad he gets the
pleasure of fishing, and that we reap the benefits from it. It's
a rare treat for us.

If you're a long-time movie buff, you'll recall Jeanne
Cooper from films such as "Redhead from Wyoming"
opposite Maureen O'Hara, and''The Man from the Alamo,"
with Glenn Ford.
If you like the soaps, you know Jeanne as the irrepress-
ible Katherine Chancellor of "The Young and the Rest-
less.';
In a recent story line, Katherine decided to have minor
facial cosmetic surgery. This ties in with Jeanne's decision
to do ditto. As with a previous facial procedure, this one
will also be done on screen.
Jeanne is the mother of three sons and a daughter
(Corbin Bernsen, the star of"L.A. Law," is one of her kids)
and the grandmother of four. She acknowledges that she's
a "lady of a certain age." But she says, "Whatever your
birth certificate says is not as important as how you feel
about yourself. I'm not having the cosmetic surgery be-
cause the world around us thinks older people have be-
come irrelevant. I'm having it because I want to look
better. I like who I am," she says. "I just want to look my
best. I feel I deserve it."
Asked what she thinks of the way television dramas, both
day and prime-time, treat older women, Cooper laughed.
"Their perception of us is that we don't exist as fully
functioning human beings. Sometimes they write us as
being a little short in the mental department, as if they
assume older people must always lose their mental abilities
as they gain years. This is absolute nonsense, but that
doesn't seem to deter them. Also, why is that you can have
an older man in a romantic situation with a much younger
woman, but if you have a story about an older woman
involved with a younger man -- which makes good biologi-
cal sense, by the way -- people are horrified? By not
acknowledging that older women are capable of romance,
they're saying we're not complete. I' m not saying that older
women have to have romances; that should be a personal
choice. But I do say that no one should presume we're not
capable of romance, or anything else we choose to do."
