Pahrump Valley Gazette, Thursday, August 21, 1997 AAI "Dante's Peak," drama peaked, effects ecstatic by Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer Pierce Brosnan's screen personification is a character who views action as shooting your enemy while sipping a martini. With this image well entrenched in whatever role he plays, it's no wonder he comes offsecond to the special effects in "Dante's Peak." These are no ordinary special effects, these are brilliant. These are "Twister" with a five pack a day habit. There is no non-smoking zone on this mountain top. The researchers did their work well, it was Mt. St. Helen's all over again. I saw the original blow. This wds almost as good. Even though the credits claims no similarity to persons dead or alive, the character of Ruth, the grandmother, is a reincarnation of Harry Truman, who refused to leave St. Helen as she blew. The story line is that the town of "Dante's Peak" is picked as the second most livable city in the United States. Enter Brosnan as a volcanologist who warns people they must evacuate or perish. Naturally there are hosts of unbelievers. But the volcano brings religion to all and, ;n the end,the believers are saved and the unbelievers perish, and "Dante's Peak" becomes the most unlivable ash heap this side of Hades. As stated earlier Pierce Brosnan is not a rugged action figure. This story cried for an Indiana Jones, and Alan Quartermain, but what we got was Remington Steel in r khaki. Even Linda Hamilton as the love interest didn't add much spark to the drama. Of course this isn't the type of film to be rented for heavy plotting and realistic characters. You rent this film to be caught up in the realism of the special effects and on that level "Dante's Peak" blows smoke in your face and covers you with ashes.. I. l}ant' P 7. Ivltro ;.
