Pahrump Valley Gazette, Thursday, August 14, 1997 AA1 J "The Devil's Own," dramatic outing by Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer "Devil's Own" is a taut thriller with two of the top theater stars heading the credits. With this much star power and in a thriller to boot, this should have been a mega hit. The problem is in the directing of Alan Pakula. This story should have been tights with tricky twists, but instead the viewer got sluggishness with lobotomised lobs. As you watch, you keep telling yourself, "hang in there, it'll get better," and it does. Actually it's a very good story, it just takes too long to tell it. If this had been a cooking class you would have prayed for a microwave. The storyline is about Frankie McGuire, an I.R.A. terrorist who is sent to the U.S. to buy weapons. He is housed with Tom O'Meara, a New York cop. Ignorant of Frankie's real identity, a friendship is bonded between the two men. Tom has to battle with his own demon When he is forced to come to grips with the inherit violence of wearing a uniform. This only becomes stronger when Frankie's brand of terror is visited upon Tom's family. All this leads to a very riveting climax. Frankie McGuire was played by Brad Pitt, a believable characterization of a man born to a violent death. Harrison Ford played Tom O'Meara. This is not Ford's typical action figure, but instead he is just an average guy doing a job he loves. He came off very well in this role. It is impossible to tell a story about police or the I.R.A. without action, but this is not an action pic, so the action is played down with the emphasis on the story line, which makes this devil appear to be dragging his own tale. But as stated earlier, "stick with it, it's a good story." AIR FORCE ONE (R) eOOO BUReER (re) 4. [in P 9. [cream ..4. [ling )l I0.
