Nicholas Way Sat - 10 - .3 727-1655 ffl,m Letters to the Editor EDEN thanks Downing I'd like to respond to a few points raised by the Pahrump Valley Gazette columnist Dave Downing in his July 17 story regarding EDEN's foray into the mysteries of the internet. First, Dave's opening paragraph might cause readers to believe that we are entirely tax funded. We are partially funded by a matching grant from the Nevada Commission on Economic Development which requires a maximum of some $9,000 from county and local government which is rarely met as the counties and towns are pretty close to broke these days. The balance must be raised from the private sector, ie: business and individual memberships and contributions. Last year we met our match with $50 to spare which left a number of programs unfulfilled due to lack of funds. The remainder of the article contained some well de- served constructive criticisms which we are aware of and are working on as time and funding permits. We would like to switch to Sierra Net which was not on-line when our home page project began. Hopefully this will be taken care of within the next couple of months. As for the graphics, I don't even know what they look like due to the cheap browser we're using. I'll take Dave's word for the lack of qual;ty and hope that some artistic computer geek would like to assist us with it. Although none of the cable companies support EDEN, I would still refrain from taking any pot shots which hurt the image of our part of the state. Advertising our interest- ing rainfalls is an idea worth covering but we have yet to come up with a way to sell people on white water rafting Highways 95, 6, 376, 375 or 160 as there can be quite a wait. In closing, it's been quite a year of recovery for EDEN and economic development in general and, while we don't need any adverse publicity which can harm the efforts of all involved, we appreciate any constructive input which helps the cause. Don't worry Dave, the door will always be unlocked for you. Fiessati Pahrump Serious problems in Nye County The following exchange took place during a break of the Nye County Commissioners meeting at the Pahrump Community Center on July 15, 1997, between our elected assemblyman, Roy Neighbors, and myself. In front of a few bystanders, all within hearing range. In a very courteous manner, I asked Mr. Neighbors if he could provide'me some answers and possible solutions to sot \\; very serious problems existing in Nye County and which have gone on for some time - to the upper most concerns of the majority of taxpayers. Here then, is a chronological review of the questions I posed to him and his responses to me:"In Nye County we have a population of approximately 30,000 along with a county manager, whose salary is $117,000 per year. and an "Assistant," who draws $100,000, all from us taxpayers! Yet, the Governor makes $77,000. "Do you sense that there is something going on which is way out of whack and that the truth is being withheld from us taxpayers, such as corruption, fraud and malfea- sance by elected officials for permitting this outrage?" R.N.: "I am a state representative - I know nothing of what you are talking about." Me: "Where do you live, sir?" R.N.: "Tonopah." Me: "Then you must be aware of the fact that the tax supported Nye County Regional Hospital in Tonopah has sucked nearly $5 million in the past three years, over and above its allotted budget, from we tax-slaves ! And rumors are growing that we are on the verge of bankruptcy ! Is it legal for our commissioners to use Payments Equal to Taxes (PE'Vr) money for such bailouts?" R.N.: " I have no idea what is taking place up there." Me: "That seems awfully strange to me, especially since you live there and that you are also a taxpayer. ', R.N.: "Look, wise guy -- don't push me!" Me: "What about the luxurious 'judicial center' in Tonopah, which taxpayers refer to as the 'Taj Mahal' and has cost us $14 million ($4 million over budget) - why was it built in Tonopah (population 3,000), which is 170 miles from Pahrump (population 23,000), ignoring the fact that we have a tiny justice court and prospective jurors are inconvenienced? R.N.: "That was a local decision and not my jurisdiction !" ME: "Why does the county place 12 employees at the land fill in Pahrump, the lowest paid, who earns $13 per hour and is stationed at the gate to take down license numbers of vehicles? Yet the local disposal company is not charged a dime for each truckload dumped, to help offset this costly operation?" R.N.: 'Tm not going to subject myself to this inquisi- tion, any longer, besides you are pissing me off!" If this man is not*Brain Dead, then is it possible that he and lots of others may indeed be involved in a massive coverup, or miss-use of tax- payers money. You be the judge.
