Pahrump Valley Gazette, Thursday, August 7, 1997 9
To the people sitting in darkness in Nye "
If the good people of Pahrump don't
collectively wake up and smell the cof-
fee, in the very near future, the destruc-
tion of your community and your life-
style will be sit in stone.
A key tool being used to accomplish
this goal is the manipulation of Nevada's
parcel map laws and how this manipula-
tion is being applied to regulations and
requirements imposed under the auspices
of the Pahrump Regional Planning Com-
mission (PRPC).
N y e
County's par-
cel map ordi-
nances have
been, since
the early
" 990s, in di-
-ect violation of the requirements al-
lowed to be imposed by a governing body,
as clearly spelled out in Nevada Revised
Statutes, Chapter 278.
The extenuation of these violations, as
written into the ordinance creating the
PRPC by Nye County administrative staff,
begs more than the attention presently
being given to the matter by some in the
Pahrump community.
The problem is not as complex as many
would have you believe. In its most basic
form it is as follows: if land developers,
in collusion with a governing body, can
find a way to make it so excessively
expensive to subdivide land into rela-
tively large acreage rural type lots - one
to two and one half acres for instance -
then the only land development that will
take place will be high density housing.
And just as when invariably, if you cram
too many rats in a box, even though there
is plenty of food and water for all of
them, they still will begin eating each
other, high density housing creates prob-
lems that are historically not experienced
and not a part of a rural life-style.
Without attempting to make this article a
legal brief I will say this. The Nye County
District Attorney, Bob Beckett, did make it
one of the cornerstones of his campaign
when running for office, that he would
work to unravel and simplify Nye County's
parcel map laws.
In partial defense of the Honorable Mr.
Beckett, who I believe to know full well
that Nye County's parcel map ordinances
are in viola-

It is a political problem as much as a
legal problem. As the average citizen, sit-
ting in darkness, cannot bring themselves
to believe that their elective representa-
tives, through actions allowed to be taken
by appointed positions in Nye County gov-
ernment, would all of them to be raped and
pillaged not only of their tax dollars but
their rural life-style as well, it makes it
easier, more comfortable, and automatic
for such things to continue to go on.
The beast feeds on the breast. And as
long as the people sitting in darkness choose
to remain so, so they will.
That is this man's opinion.
