T Pahrump Valley Gazette, Thursday, July 31, 1997 AAI [] [] [] "Underworld," unconventional unhinging by Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer "Underworld" is a disturbing film. On first viewing the film appears trite, the characters, unsympathetic, sidewinding, stereotypes, and the storyline, ugly, unintelligent and useless. On the plus side there is a dazzling stylization, and some brilliant alliterations in the dialogue, as well as Barney's basic rule of film viewing, "Trust no one." Obviously this film needs another viewing and a change in the viewers mind set to be enjoyed. First you have to accept the world is run by the lawless; there are no police in this film at all. Next you have to accept death as a way of life and bare-breasted women as window dressing. In case you planned on showing this on the VCR at the day care center be advised that this is a capital "R" rating. Watch the way the stage is set and listen to the dialogue, and the flick becomes more than a basic, boring, blood bath. The story is about Johnny Crown, fresh from prison, who decides to celebrate Father's Day by settling the score with everyone who helped in the hit on his father. While traveling on his resolve of revenge in a radiant red limo, he picks up childhood buddy, Frank Gavilan, and takes him along for the ride. Denis Leary plays the psychopathic avenger, Johnny Crown. His character is that of an unbalanced pit viper, but in this film, it works. Joe Mantegna plays, along for the fide, Frank Gavilan. His characterization is closer to the bubble of normality but not enough to detract from this out-of-balance film. Traci Lords, who was last seen in...actually I have no idea what she was last seen in but she made her name in porno flicks, makes a briefly costumed appearance. Strange casting in Abe Vigoda, from the old Barney Miller TV show, as Frank's father. If you can program normal out of your mind, you can enjoy "Underworld." l.. :lin 9 lack) (o. TurQncQ ).
