It's hot. It's dry. It's brown. Your searching eye discovers an oasis. Shade for your sweltering body. Beauty for your parched psyche. Your oasis is a small tree with a branching canopy cutting the sun's rays. Your mind leaps from the desert to the tropics when your eye embraces the delicate, trumpet shaped lavender flowers adorning the branches. You have a sense of water, of respite. How can this tree be so peacefully at home in the harsh desert? Maybe, it's a mirage. You touch the trunk, the branches and the soft flower petals. It's real. What is it? What is it doing in the desert? Your discovery is a Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis), and ,,.,,despite its delicate appearance the tree is a tough desert native. It ows along dry washes up to elevations of 4,000 feet in the -"southwestern quarter of the United States and south into Mexico. The long, weeping leaves explain the name although the tree is not a true willow. The slender leaves can be curved or straight and compliment the twiggy, open form and smooth gray bark. The fragrant flowers, colored in shades of white, pink and lavender, appear in April and continue to bloom until late summer. Slender seed pods from four to 12 inches long form as the blooms fade and frequently remain on the tree all winter. The Desert Willow' s modest size, usually from 16 to 25 feet high and about 15 to 20 feet wide, makes it a good choice for a patio tree to provide summer shade and winter sun. The decidu- ous plant can also be found in shrub form or as tall as 30 feet: It' s beauty makes it an appealing specimen tree. The fragrant tree is perfect for an outdoor garden room or wherever you want to create an oasis effect. The attractive tree adds color and interest to desert land- scapes, wild gardens and transitional areas. Planted in clusters, the Desert Willow will provide a pleasing visual screen, a windbreak and can be used for erosion control. It's sturdiness makes it a candidate for streets, roadsides and median strips. Tolerant of extremes of hot and cold, the Desert Willow will also survive some drought. However, lack of adequate water may cause blossoms to drop or not develop and can force the plant into dormancy. Infrequent, slow, deep watering and some pruning, to shape the tree and to control suckers, meets the major care requirements. The pretty tree likes open ground. Never plant it in lawn. Do plant it where the ground will drain. Hardy, the Desert Willow will suryi've heat, cold, drought and wind, but too much water will prove fatal. Local nurseries carry this desert jewel in containers for under $20. Some new varieties offer an alternative to the pastel lavender/pink flowers'of the native. Rio Salado has rich, deep purple flowers. The color remains vibrant in spite of the heat. Lucretia Hamilton adds another choice. This semi-dwarf variety will fill small spaces with color and the scent of extra-fragrant flowers. Eager to please, Desert Willow grows rapidly, up to three DESERT WILLOW-An artful, fragrant native.
