Safety: the word for July 4th
CARSON CITY ---Fire safety tips for the Fourth of July,
camping excursions and boating are big concerns being
expressed by the State Fire Marshal ---especially during the
three-day holiday.
The tips have been issued through the Department of
Motor Vehicles and Public Safety Fire Marshal's Office in
Carson City.
The safest way to enjoy Fourth of July fireworks is to
watch an outdoor public fireworks display that is managed by
professional pyrotechnicians.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the
State Fire Marshal reports that, since 1995, more than 11,000
people in the U.S. have suffered severe injuries as a result of
amateur use of fireworks. Those at greatest risk are children
between the ages of 10-14 years old. Even sparklers, often
mistaken as safe, can burn as hot as 1,200 Fahrenheit.
In Nevada, fireworks are illegal in most counties including

• ; ' Enjoy the Fourth of July by being aware of the potential
dangers, and never pick up or touch fireworks that you find.
If you follow these simple fire safety rules, you'll be sure
to have a great time at campouts:
* Make sure your campfire is built downwind and away
from your tent. Clear away dry vegetation.

* Dig a pit for the campfire and surround it with rocks.
* Look for park service regulations signs warning of
potential fire hazards.
*Before leaving your campsite, pour water over thecover
the fire with dirt.
* Never use gasoline or liquid fuel as a fire starter, use dry
kindling.
* When you pitch your tent, pitch it well away from the
campfire.
* Use only flashlights or batterowered lanterns inside the
Veterans 4th of July pot luck
To all veterans and their immediate families in Pahrump
Valley. The 4th of July pot luck, hot dogs, barbecue chicken
and steak, chocolate cake furnished "free" by VFW and
Auxiliary Post 10054 along with American Legion and Aux-
iliary Post 22, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ladies please bring a pot
luck dish. Come out and enjoy a good time.
Elks Lodge celebration
The Pahrump Elks Lodge No. 2796 will be having its
July 4 celebration from 10 a.m. - ?
Free hot dogs with all the fixings, 50 cent draft beer,
potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw, etc.
Bring your musical instruments for a GREAT jam
session!
Amargosa 's 4th
The VFW is having a big
4th of July celebration. There
will be kids games, live mu-
sic, dancing, dollar hot dogs,
burgers, and beer, and 50 cent
soda. At dark there will, of
course, be fireworks. Come
enjoy the night. On Sunday
at noon there will be an Inde-
pendence Day luau at the
Longstreet. You will even be
able to learn to hula dance.
NOTICE
Pursuant to NRS 244.085 (5), the
Nye County Board of Commissioners
will hold its second meeting of July on Tuesday,
July 15, 1997, at the Bob Ruud Community
Center located at 160 & East Basin Road
Pahrump Nevada. The meeting will
begin at 8:30 a.m.

If your favorite summertime events include boating, make
sure you remember the following basic rules of safety on and
off the water:
* Before fueling, make sure that you extinguish any
smoking material and shut down all motors, fans and heating
devices.
* Ensure that the fueling nozzle is gorunded to the fuel
intake and do not fill to capacity...leave room for expansion.

blower several minutes.
* On board your covered boat, consider installing a smoke
detector and remember to test the battery before using the boat
each time. Replace the battery once a year.
