Out Esmeralda Way Beautification project in for Goldfield by Carol Sirnes Good Morning ! It's the end of the month again! Seems like the calendar was turned to June yesterday! The Goldfield Chamber of Commerce held its bi-monthly luncheon meeting at the Mozart June 26, with a large atten- dance. The $7,000 check presented to the commissioners last week from the U.S. Forest Service Rural Community Assis- tance Grant Fund will be used for the beautification of downtown Goldfield. Mainly the enhancing of the Historical Park adjacent to the Goldfield Public Library with picnic tables, benches and desert decor landscaping with Joshua trees. This project will continue on both sides of U.S. 95 into the business district. It will in- clude using four students from the Summer Youth Pro- gram provided by the Ne- vada Business Services in addition to the U.S. Forest Service and Ran Huntsinger of the Bureau of Land Man- agement. Nevada a popular film location According to the Commission on Economic Development Motion Picture Division, Nevada is becoming quite popular as a filming location for movies, TV programs, musical videos and commercials, with the state taking in more than $I00 million in 1996 Some of these filmed in the Goldfield area over the years include "Butterfly," starring Pia Zadora and Orson Wells; "Vanishing Point," starring Barry Newman; "Cherry 2000," starring Melonie Griffith; "The Stranger," starring Kathy Long; and "The Impossible Dream," with local residents Mike Gregor and Bink Buel. But, do the local businesses get to keep any worthwhile souvenirs or mementos? Now they will, since Erik Joseph, assistant director for the State of Nevada Motion Picture Division has begun the program called Filmwalk Fihnwalk is an environmentally-safe 8 inch by 10 inch framed silver aluminum or bronze alloy plaque that is placed at the location where notable films, television shows or videos were filmed. The plaque will include the name of the show, year, the names of the participants and will be permanetly mounted at the location. For more information, call Erik Joseph at (702) 486-2711. Lest O'Shea. owner of the Goldfield Hotel is donating $300 for a plaque to be placed on the hotel Recall petition Concerning the recall petition filed against Esmeralda County District Attorney Steve Evenson by Fish Lake Valley resident William Wright who has until August 16, 1997 to get the necessary signatures for a special election ballot, which will costs the voters and taxpayers of Esmeralda County thousands of dollars. Benefits of Senior Dimensions Shannon Thomason of Las Vegas, met with local residents at the Goldfield Community Center to discuss the enhanced benefits of Senior Dimensions, a division of Health Plan of Nevada, Inc. She explained the Medicare Program and their coverage and why other supplement programs are needed especially concerning eyeglasses, dental work and prescriptions.
