Imagine if there was an entire fleet of RVers along the highway, showing traffic and making your daily com- mute that much longer. This just might happen On June 5, the Clark County Planning Com- mission approved a zone change affecting 89 acres located at the junc- tion of Hwy 160 and Blue Diamond Rd. (Hwy 159, the road leading into Red Rock Canyon). The zone change was proposed by Stephen Macie of the Outdoor Resorts of America to ac- commodate a 672 lot RV re- sort, including a gas station, convenience store, car wash, putting green, several lakes and four swimming pools. There are also future plans to lease 270 acres of BLM land to develop a 100 acre equestrian facility. The equestrian site would provide enclosed arenas, barns, trails, and possibly a golf course Macie's plan met with great resistance by the Local Citizens Advisory Board, which undoubt- edly denied the request for further development of the area. There were also 700 protest signatures on file with the CCPC. Traffic on Hwy 160 currently averages 9000 cars a day, and Hwy 159 averages 3000, contributed by the heavy trucks coming to and from the James Hardie Mine. With the influx of RVs and the daily travel on these highways, traffic could become a major issue. Travel time into Las Vegas could increase by up to 30 minutes, according to local resi- dents. Since the proposed complex is only 1.3 miles from the Red Rock Canyon National Con- servation Area, the surround- ing environment is of seri- ous concern to local resi- dents. There is a larg," ! population of wild mustan and the ever present burro residents that will . be directly af-. fected by the en-' i croachment of: State HiglawaY 160 "" commercial devel- ....- opment Lakes, golf courses, pools, and parking lots are structures that affect the desert wildlife and ecological balance of nature. The local residents feel that the simple infra- structure will not support such a development. The water supply for the area is supplied by the private company of James Hardie Mine. The current water agreement for the Blue Diamond community is limited to 150 acre feet, or 176 hookups, less than what would be required by the complex alone. While the Clark County staff researchers bad recommended a denial, the issue will pass before the CCPC on July 2.
