"Mars Attacks!" Massive assault on humor
by: Barney Basin
Gazette Reviewer
To enjoy "Mars Attacks!" it has to be accepted for
what it is, an extremely clever piece of satire.
Every cliche known to man, Martian, or monster is
in this film. It is a collection of all the bad "B" box-
office bombs of the sci-fi type.
Don't even think of taking this flick serious, just sit
back and laugh with it.
First clue to the level of this production is the locale
of the Martian landing. They land in Pahrump. Actu-
ally, the film makers chose to use Kansas and make it
look like Pahrump, something about director Tim
Burton being haunted by the "Oz" mystique.
Most visitors to our township want to check out the
lay of our golf course, or the other laid back sights of
our town, not so with these mean, lean, green beings.
Their purpose is to commit constant carnage, and so
the fun begins. Remember, Director Burton is known
for his dark side and to him the removal of congress
with a ray gun is funny.
Earth fights back, but our weapons won't stop the
invaders, the nuclear bombs are useless, all looks dark,
when an unexpected weapon helps us win and regain
what's left of our planet.
Not to reveal the winning weaponry, but it may be
a good idea to retrieve those Slim Whitman albums
r
OH SURE
from the trash.
The cast is crammed with big-name stars, like Jack
Nicholson, Glen Close, Annette Bening, Pierce
Brosnan, Danny DeVito and many others, but almost
every performance is a cameo characterization to the
special effects.
Basic moral to this satirical tale is don't trust anyone
with pop eyes and a green oversized head, and don't
take anything serious that lands in Pahrump.
