6 Thursday, June 12, 1997 Pahrump Valley Gazette Recall School Board and demand a 00;rand Jury It just gets deeper and deeper. It must be in the water. The Payrump Valley School System has a terrible black mark on it and it's simply disgusting. To think, these are the same people that would so up-righteously shun their noses at me because of one of the businesses I'm in. My business enterprise couldn't hold a stick to theirs. Peterson, Worden and now the self-admitted Lepley. Further, it has been alleged that Lepley may be positive, although tests to deter- mine that are currently being conducted. According to reports, this man wasn't even supposed to be involved with the school district m but he was called up anyway. Meanwhile, down Carson City way, a local mother was laying it on the state as to exactly how bad it is and how bad the school district is. Terri Miller, a mother of three and Becki Mouser, a former student who alleges she had sex with her former basketball coach in Payrump. They claim that three Payrump High School teachers engaged in sex with their students. Well, that's not surprising. I started out with three names. But, they further blast the school district and other teachers and management as having a "didn't see" attitude, or even a "don't care" attitude. "One teacher was caught on the floor of his classroom by another faculty member and was al- lowed to resign and move on with a letter of recom- mendation," Miller told the Senate Judiciary Com- mittee. Miller also told the panel that she had requested an investigation by the school district and that they told her that a teacher "coming on" to a student was not grounds for dismissal. .With Payrump teacher Peterson the school dis- tnct suspended him for five days but he threatened to sue unless his record was cleared and he received back pay. The district backed dowh but a subse- quent sheriff's department investigation later proved him to be guilty as hell. He is currently serving life in prison with the possibility of parole. With the attitude of the Nye County School Dis- trict, as so aptly demonstrated by Teri Miller, I wouldn't be surprised if the school district hired him back when he gets his parole. Hi Ingh the case of Mouser, she state s that she had sex with her Payrump School basketball coach because she was "afraid to say no." She claims she was molested. The coach, Robert Worden, was allowed to resign after admitting having "consensual" sex with Mouser. Allowed to resign? "They should have fired him, but his father, Don Worden, was on the school board and was a former principal at the school," Mouser told the committee. Now, Miller and Mouser have a problem. Incredibly, they have been ridiculed for coming forward. They also say that other students have told them that they're (the students) afraid to come forward because of what's happened to Miller and Mouser. ATTENTION TERI MILLER AND BECKI MOUSER! HERE IS A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM ME. STAND PROUD. TELL ALL. YOU WILL PREVAIL. DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THOSE WHO HAVE ONLY THEIR OWN PERSONAL INTERESTS. YOU i Target by Joe Richards from the Kingdom of Nye Whether you hate him or love him, he won't let you ignore him! ARE BRAVE PEOPLE WHO DESERVE THE RESPECT OF THIS COMMUNITY FOR RIPPING THE BLINDFOLD OFF THOSE WHO WOULD "RATHER NOT KNOW." How much of this is still going on that we've yet to hear about? TELL ME! Send me a note, I don't care if it is anonymous. Give me names, dates, places. I'll be glad to print every word of it. What are you going to do, ever so self-righteous Nye County School Board? Sue me? Come on. Let's go for it. Even Geraldo Rivera stated, on national television, that the Nye County School Board appears to be the most ineffective, useless board to ever survive. How is it they haven't been sued over these matters, he asked. I'll tell you how they have survived. The voters of Nye County have consistently voted them in. Why? Became most folks that go to the ballot box really don't know who these people are or what the issues are. Well, it's time to clean house. It's time for the voters to demand a recall of every single member of the board. This must stop. There is one bright cloud shining this week tho. The Senate has voted 18-2 to pass a law making it illegal for teachers to have sex with their students. One of the problems has been that if the student is over 16 years of age, the age of consent, and the act was claimed as consensual -- then the teacher could walk free. The Senate has taken measures to see that can't happen again. Let's face it, a teacher is someone a student is taught to respect from day one. The teacher is an "authority" in the student's eyes for eight hours a day. Like Mouser, how can you say no to such an authority figure? The student is intimidated into it. Meanwhile, according to Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett, the current case will be handled with full attention by the DA's office. Brian Eugene Lepley is now charged with sexual assault; attempted sexual assault; soliciting a mi- nor to commit sodomy; attempting to solicit a minor to engage in sodomy; open or gross lewd- ness and attempted open or gross lewdness. He is also charged with three counts of providing mari- juana to minors and two counts of providing alcohol to minors. While all of these charges involve one youth, Beckett said that three or four other boys have come forward and alleged that a man supplied them with alcohol and marijuana and then tried to have sex with them. His office is investigating the possibility. Don't even think about breathing a "sigh of relief" under the mis- taken belief that maybe all of this is over. It keeps resurfacing, over and over and over again. The Nye County School Board has shown complete insensitivity to this most horrible of crimes. Let's not let them off the hook this time. Let's rid ourselves of this pestilence. Recall the board. Clean the slate. A call for a Grand Jury investigation into the activities of the school board and the school district is warranted. It is time that we, as parents, find out how deep this problem is. This issue is much too serious. We cannot stick our heads in the sand over the future of our precious children. Someone needs to grab the ball and run with this one.
