Are the flying saucers leaving Nevada : Area 51 is closing down and moving to Utah? So says this month's edition of Popular Mechanics. How can that be? Nevada has grown quite attached to the flying saucers and their alien occupants, we've even based some of our tourist draw on it. How could our legislators let this happen? Isn't it enough that we've already taken -- and will, no doubt, take more of- America's nuclear garbage. Now they want to take our space aliens away from us, too? Sigh! Is nothing sacred? Seriously, I doubt the Air Force will be moving the Area 51/Groom Lake "operating location"- especially to Green River, Utah. So, if there are flying saucers at Area 51, I'm sure they'll be with us for awhile yet. Continuing from my previous column about touring the Nevada Test Site. The NTS Development Corporation is looking into having private contractors conduct tours of the Nevada Test Site. The cost for the "private tours" is projected to be from $69 to $129 per person. The funny thing is: The DOE would still have to offer FREE tours, because the Nevada Test Site is a government facility - your tax dollars at work. Needless to say, Las Vegas gaming is opposed to the idea of NTS tours. Nye County is likely to have two new "National His- toric Sites" on the NTS - Sedan Crater is already classified Agent 0 As the mtst clears from the blast, a silhouette emerges. as a National Historic Site. Petitions to add Frenchman Flat and The BREN tower have been filed, and are likely to be approved. For all the evil they may represent to some, they are, nevertheless, historic in nature. The EPA Farm on the NTS is no longer used, but in its heyday they had Sam the Bull there. Sam was a regular Bull, with one exception - he had a permanent portal into his stom- ach. The EPA used Sam to check the amount of radiation exposure animals got from eat- ing vegetation subjected to atomic testing. But, they also took Sam to the county fair in Reno, and allowed the children to don latex gloves and reach into Sam's stomach - Kinda like Biology 101, up close and personal! More to come ....
