"" 4031 NAVAJO open 8-5 Son-Sat 727- 7 New manager at Allstate matches customers to cars by Patti Babcock "Putting people in cars they can afford," is a goal Chris Clark believes in. The new manager at Allstate Rental Cars and Sales at 1721 S. Highway 160 has been doing just that since he took over May 6, 1997. A veteran in auto sales, Clark began his career as a little boy standing on a stool to wash and polish vehicles at his father's car lot. "My dad had his own car sales for 47 years," Clark said. "I learned my trade from him. He aiways kept his lot immaculate, and I believe in that." In Pahrump, immaculate can be a very big challenge, but Clark is undaunted. The lot man says he washed more vehicles in the first week Clark arrived than he had in the previous month or more. Washing cars is just one of the many details Clark watches carefully. He makes sure the late model, low mileage, regularly serviced vehicles, called "Nused" by Allstate, are in first rate condition. Many more people can afford the lower priced"Nused" car and still enjoy the benefits of an almost new car. "We call them a 'Wise Buy.' Why take the depreciation?" Clark asks. Most of the late model vehicles are from Allstate's rental fleet. Some, especially pickt" trucks where demand exceeds company supplies, are purchased from other rental agencies" who don't have retail outlets. Rental vehicles have been taken care of, Clark says. Many still have the factory warranty, and Allstate offers an extended warranty of seven years or 100,000 miles. Financing for people who may have credit problems is another area where Clark helps people. "We can obtain special financing for people with credit problems," Clark says. "A person can have bad credit for a number of reasons that may not be their fault. Length of residency and length of time on the job can both help offset credit problems." Clark likes Pahrump. It reminds him of another small town. Victorville, a California desert community, was home to him until three years ago when he moved to Las Vegas to join Allstate. He was in finance during his first two years with the company. During his third year he was a manager for two of the firm's sales lots. He says he has functioned as kind of a "problem solver, a clean up guy." Allstate currently has four locations, two in Las Ve- gas (there were four but two have been sold), one in Reno and the one in Pahrump. The company decided to have a permanent outlet in Pahrump based on the suc- cess of the tent sales they held here.
