A "green thumb," we all know, is what people
who grow plants successfully have. A friend recently
told me, "Your neighbor sure admires your green
thumb.'" I've been hearing that for years as has every-
one else who nurtures plants. Sometimes, I take it as
a compliment. Usually, I don't think much about it at
all. This time, as I looked over at my neighbor's
barren yard, I thought about it.
What is a green thumb? My mother had one. My
grandmother did too, and so do my three sons. Is it
inherited? Is it something you can learn? Is it secret
knowledge? Maybe it's magic or just plain luck.
Inherited? It is an advantage to
grow into gardening naturally by
working with your family. Still,
I know many successful garden-
ers who never grew anything until
they were adults and some of
them not until they were senior
adults. Some great growers came
from a long line of "black
thumbs." The desire to garden
will activate your "garden gene."
Without desire no amount of gar-
dening relatives will help.
Can you learn to grow plants?
You bet. Gardeners never stop
learning. There is always some-
thing new. A new species of
plant. A more efficient way to do
something. A new theory to try. A
wealth of growing information is
available in the form of books, gardening magazines,
seminars, local nurseries and gardening clubs.

A garden club has a special resource, experienced
gardeners. Gardeners, unlike cooks, do not keep their
knowledge secret. Gardeners love nothing more than
to talk about gardening. Ask a ques-
tion, and you will hear as much or
more than you wanted to know.
Anywhere you see flowers,
shrubs, vegetables and trees grow-
ing happily, you will find an ex-
perienced gardener. In most cases,
the gardener will be delighted to
give you his/her recipe for suc-
cess.
Last weekend, I stopped at a
yard sale and got a tour of a mar-
velous garden with tomatoes that
need only to turn red to be ready
to eat and peas so abundant pick-
ing is a daily chore. I also got a
few really helpful hints to im-
prove my own garden. Garden se-
crets are yours for the asking.
Magic is the rewarding part of gar-
dening. When the tiny seeds you planted and nurtured
so carefully poke their little heads through the ground,
it's magic. The magic continues as the seedling grows
into a flowering;productive plant. It's magic when a
plant that appears to be dead sprouts leaves in re-
sponse to your encouraging care.
Last year, I had magic Morning Glories. I said I
really wished I had some morning glories like a neigh-
bor has, big beautiful magenta blooms. One day in a
mixed flower bed rich with Gladiolus, I saw several
Morning Glories winding their way up the glad spires.
Probably seeds from my neighbor's plants blown in
by the wind or carried by birds. Definitely magic.
Luck, I suppose, it's always a factor. In garden-
ing, luck probably relates mostly to weather since we
can't do much about it. I think desire that leads to
reading the garden book or seed packet and subse-
quently to picking up the shovel, hoe or trowel to start
gardening is a much more critical factor than luck.
Planting the seed, putting a plant in a pot, caring
for a houseplant, paying attention to the plant in order
to meet its needs is what creates a "green thumb." It
takes thought, care, time and work to turn a thumb
green. Anyone, who truly loves, plants enough to
nurture them will have one.
Barbara Damrosch, author of "The Garden
Primer," said it best. She said, "A green thumb is a
dirty thumb."
