New Town Manager selected by Town Board
by Patti Babcock
The Pahrump Town Board voted unani-
mously to offer the Town Manager posi-
tion to George McDermott at the regular
meeting Tuesday, May 28.
The search committee comprised of
Board Members Charlie Gronda and Gary
Hollis and Town Attorney Len Smith
narrowed the field of 23 applicants to
three finalists. Smith said one of the can-
didates withdrew prior to the interview
process, but called later to ask that he be
reconsidered. The board declined to re-
open interviews. The other finalist was a
good candidate, Smith said, but his abil-
ity to relocate could be delayed due to his
wife's serious health problems.
The search committee was unani-
mous in its recommendation of
McDermott. Hollis said a reference he
spoke with by phone spoke highly of the
candidate and said if McDermott accepted
the position, "Pahrump would be getting
a bargain."
McDermott is currently an Adminis-
trator, Treasurer and Finan-
cial Officer for a borough
in New Jersey and is certi-
fied by the State of New
Jersey as a Financial Pub-
lic Officer. The search com-
mittee said the candidate' s
extensive financial back-
ground would be useful to
the town. They said he ap-
pears to be a person who
will stay in Pahrump.
Scott Nielsen resigned
after serving less than ayear
as Town Manager. His pre-
decessor, Roger Baltz,
served less than two years.
The candidate, of Brigantine, New Jer-
sey, was offered the position at a salary of
$50,627 (grade 30, step 5 on the town pay
scale) during a telephone call placed by
Gronda on Wednesday morning.
Gronda said he had not received a
final acceptance yet when contacted
Wednesday afternoon. He reaffirmed his
belief McDermott would be a good Town
Manager. Gronda said the candidate could
be on the job within 30 days of final
acceptance. Gronda hopes he can be here
sooner.
Mike Mclnerny, a member of the au-
dience, asked why McDermott would take
a pay cut to move to Pahrump. Hollis said
the candidate's wife, who has a gaming
license in New Jersey, wants to work in
the Las Vegas casino industry. They also
want to be closer to a daughter and gra6d-
children who live in Las Vegas.
