Commission notes
Other items on the commission agenda of May 19:
1. Nye County Hospital District--No action was taken
because representatives were not present.
2. Self-insured employee health insurance plan--A
medical insurance plan from Hometown Health was presented
by Rachel Nicholson, discussed and voted to approve 5-0.
3. Animal control ordinancg---A motion to increase
licensing fees for dogs in Nye county and to include the
licensing of cats was proposed. More money needs to be
raised to adequately pay for animal control services. It passed
5-1.
]P 4. Cooperative Extension--Jane Hutchins of the
Cooperative Extension office stated that her paid position
was the only one left in the Extension office because of budget
cuts. She tried to emphasize that there will be no 4-H, Master
Gardener or telephone services in Nye county because of the
cuts. She is trying to obtain grant money from various groups
to remain functioning. The Pahrump Garden Club help and
volunteers are the only way Pahrump is currently receiving
any services at all.
5. Terrible's Town--John Thielman, general manager of
Terrible's Town in Pahrump, showed architect's renderings
of future high-rise plans for the facility.
6. Amargosa Town Advisory Board--Members of the
AV Town Advisory Board asked for an ordinance to change
to a Town Board form of government. The commissioners
sent them back to the drawing board to come back with a
definite plan as to how they were going to fund services. They
also asked for a 6% room tax to help raise funds. Jerry Sun,
general manager of Longstreet' s Casino in AV, after stating
that Longstreet's was the only nonprofit casino in the state,
said that the casino was prepared to pay the room tax but asked
that the money be used to proaaote tourism to the area. He said
that he was concerned about protecting the investment already
made to the community by Jim Marsh, owner, and that the
facilities, such as the new swimming pool, though not
previously open for public use, could be used for the citins
of AV, on a reservation basis.
The ordinance would affect a
few smaller businesses in AV.
It was passed 5-0.
