people, McRae repeated, "It's agreed upon that if you take a
freeze then there will be no reduction in force due to the
budget. I'm not going to tell the sheriff what to do with his
budget. That's not a decision for me to make. These positions
are secured between 7/1/97 and 6/30/98."
Commissioner Ira "Red" Copass said later that "If we have
to balance this budget, somebody is going to lose places.
Let's face it, in this county, they (some small departments)
can't operate. You're going to have to lose some people in the
sheriff's department."
"In the future we will have all calls dispatched from the
same place and we can cut from there (the dispatcher's
office). But I don't think we can guarantee the undersheriff
anything," he said. "I heard through the grapevine that some
people aren't going along with it (a proposed salary freeze in
the sheriff's department)."
"Some of the commissioners decided to take a pay cut back
to 94/95 level. I did. Revert, Cam (McRae) and Davis did as
well," he said, "but Carver didn't."
"The commissioners aren't paid much," Copass said, "and
most of them don't depend on it to live on. But if we can take
a pay cut, others might have to."
