My article two weeks ago about the forthcoming population boom in Clark County turns out to be only the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully, it isn't the one that sunk the Titanic. This past week the U.S. Census Bureau re- leased their population estimate for 1995. The Census is taken every ten years but in the middle fifth year they make an estimate based on their own criteria-- in one case, Esmeralda, it was probably an exit poll. Nye County is the 13th fastest growing county in the entire United States. The population estimate shows an increase of just over 38 percent since 1990. No doubt that the cause is in the southern county. Everyone seems to agree that the northern county could be wiped out by a moderate dust devil. Meanwhile, Esmeraida County is the 13th fastest shrinking county. The Census Bureau says the county population has dropped nearly 12 percent. Whew*. What a see-saw. Esmeralda, with its already thin tax base, can hardly afford such a drop. But what about Nye? Can we afford such an increase? Let's face it, the increase is in Payrump and it's going to get worse before it gets better. The town simply isn't developed to accom- modate such a fast increase. The new tax base is too new to be of any help and county-wide the budget is already stretched thin. Could be my recent prophecy is coming to bear fruit much earlier than even I predicted. I I I I He who is in love with himself has at least this adva, tage he won't e.counter many rivals. The Nye County Commissioners and the Payrump Town Board have some pretty serious bumps ahead. The biggest question now is, "Are they up to handling the problems?" We shall see. By the way, the fastest growning county in the entire country is Douglas County, Colorado with a 65 percent increase in population over the past five years. What'd they learn? Cloning? The fastest shrinking county in the U.S. is Aleutians West Area, Alaska with a 44.5 percent decrease in population.
