'Cutworms
Collars' can
reduce attacks by
night-flying moths
This is the seasonal time
for cutworms to attack plants
in the garden.
The larvae, immature
form of a dark night-flying
moth, emerge from the soil
at night and crawl along the
surface of the ground until
they find a plant stem.
A single surface-feeding
cutworm can sever or dam-
age many young plants in a
single night.
To reduce damage, use
"cutworm collars" around
the stem of each plant or
closely-space group of
plants. These collars can be
made of stiff paper or alumi-
num foil. They should be at
least 2" high and pressed
firmly in the ground.
