abuse. The telling of Jeanna's story will take a book. She
is working on one.
Singing, sewing, and writing poetry (see accompany-
ing box) are only a sampling of this attractive woman's
talents. Jeanna has come a long way from her traumatic
childhood, still the terror is as close and real as a word or
action that triggers a flash back.
The abused child has become an adult survivor. Daddy
is gone. But, even now, Jeanna watches for the shadow on
the wall.
Tragically, Jeanna's story is not unique. Nevada has
one of the highest rates of reported child abuse in the
nation. In 1995, there were 10,487 substantiated cases of
child abuse. Like Jeanna in 83.8% of the substantiated
cases of abuse, the perpetrator was the child's natural
parent.
Today there is more protection for children like Jeanna.
Incredibly, most states had laws to protect animals before
they enacted laws to protect children. Child Protection
laws now require teachers, doctors, law enforcement per-
sonnel and all those who deal with children to report
suspected cases of child abuse. Training is available to
help identify an abused child.

report child abuse and how to protect your child from
abuse.
