@ Beam me up...I'm covered. Space aliens have exploded in popular culture. From renderings of classic alien heads on T-shirts, to movies, books and television. Some treat this as humor, others take the thought of alien visitations very seriously-- and sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the two. There is compelling evi- dence on both sides of the space alien controversy. The "true believers" have their eyewit- ness testimony, fuzzy photo- graphs and regressive hypnosis. The "skeptics" have critical thinking, natural phenomena and military aviation to explain away the possibility. But what if the skeptics are wrong? What if we really are being visited by strange creatures from a distant galaxy? What if they come to abduct you. Well...for $19.95 you can be covered for life. Yes, the , UFO Abduction Insurance Company will sell you a ten million dollar insurance policy against alien abduction. What's the catch you ask? Other than the claim form requires a signature of an "authorized onboard alien," noth- ing. You get abducted, get the creature to sign on the line, and your beneficiary is ten million richer. Although, the benefits are paid out one dollar a year, for ten million years. Agent 0 As the mist clears from the blast, a silhouette emerges. Youth Center hopes rekindled by Patti Babcock Like the Phoenix, the Youth Center has risen again. Tuesday night, in an often played scene, Bob Tomaro made an emotional plea to the Pahrump Town Board to ask for support of a Youth Center. "If we lose the youth today, we'll lose the country down the road. If we can't show them respect today, how do we expect to be treated when they are the leaders?" he asked. He requested the $67,000 in the capital fund, budgeted for the Multi-Purpose Center, be committed to the Youth Center as it was originally. Tomaro thought he had realized his dream of a Youth Center for Pahrump. Then the project was enlarged in soope to a Multi-Purpose Center. The project was abandoned after a study revealed lack of community support. Community support wasn't lacking at the meeting. Young people, one after another, spoke about the need for a Youth Center. A place to go. Something to do. They talked about how the Southside Boxing Gym, which most of them belong to, gave them a positive alternative to drugs, smoking and liquor while building confidence. Their boxing group needs a home the proposed center could provide. It wasn't only the young, Pat Mankins, Philip Jensen and Diana Stiles spoke of the need for a place in the community for young people. Tomato also asked the town to request the $100,000 Nye County had budgeted for the Multi-Purpose Center which has since been designated to build an office in Pahrump for the County Planning Commission and the newly formed Pahr- ump Regional Planning Commission. Board member Steve Rainbolt said he would support committing the $67,000 to the Youth Center, but would not support asking the county to reallocate the $100,000. County Commissioner Cameron McRae said he would support the wishes of the town and would ask for the money if that was the Board's wish. He indicated there was little chance of getting any additional money, but advised, "Spend it before someone else does." Still trying, Tomaro suggested the Board might consider an existing property, the old vita- min factory. He said he had r " , ...... spoken with Mr. Odom who indicated he would consider selling the facility to the town.
