The Emigrant Trail Museum is located just off Interstate-80, two miles west of Truckee, 12593 Donner Pass Road, Truckee, California, 96161, tele- phone (916) 582-7892. Just a hundred and fifty years ago, April 25, 1847, the last of the Donner Party survivors arrived with the fourth relief party at Johnson's Ranch, head- quarters for the rescue parties, so the date for the reception and lecture is most propitious. The reception is at 6:00 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7:00. Unlike previous Donner Party pub- lications based upon interviews, remi- niscences, speculation and fictional no- n Friday, April 25, the University of Nevada Press will host a tions of what took place at the Donner Lake camp and Alder Creek that terrible winter, Dr. Hardesty and four other writers, Michael Broadhead, Donald K. Grayson, Susan Lindstrom and George L. Miller, take a multi-disciplinary approach. Hardesty and Broadhead offer a solid chronology as well as a critical survey of the literature and Hardesty and Lindstrom detail the 1984 archaeological excavation of the Murphy Cabin site at the lake camp. The authors also analyze the results of a dig at Alder Creek. Donald K. Grayson deals with the demography of death from the perspective of gender, age and fam- ily while others consider nutrition and weather history. The authors comment on the evidence for canni- balism and raise questions about the location of the shelters at Alder Creek and the nature of the activi- ties of General Stephen Watts Kearny and his men at the lake camp in June 1847. Taken as a whole, this new work on the Donner Party tragedy is the best ever to come off the press and should be part of every private li- brary in the state.
