Medical News Pahrump Valley Gazette, Thursday, April 17, 1997 9 Taking Charge Reducing the effects of RA In our last column we talked about taking charge of your healing processes and some strategies for relieving pain associated with Rheumatoid Arthri- tis. We emphasized the importance of movement, even in active stages, of non-power balanced exercises, and listening to your body for signals of stress. You need to give yourselfR&amp;R (rest and recovery, that is). There are nondrug healing pro- grams today that tell you the first step is taking control - that's true with any illness you may be dealing with. Knowing your body and its stress levels can put you in charge of caring for that body. We are not always helpless victims here ! A few other steps for controlling RA are diet, reducing stress, and determination to make the difference. People with arthritis find cheese (mild products) in- flammatory agents. Yeast can be crippling (cheap breads aren't made with yeast). Vegetables of the nightshade group like potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, alcohol, caffeine, sugar and salt can cause flare-ups. Immune substances that attack your joints are made up of fatty acids and every American diet - linoleic acid - found in margarine, safflower oil, corn oil, sunflower and soybean oils. An arthritic person needs Omega 3 oils (fish oils), canola oil, and flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil has been found to reduce inflammation and should be taken as a supplement. Some people put the seeds in the bottom of their cup of herbal tea, let them soften, then chew them. The oil comes in liquid and capsule form, also. Vegetarian diets (no red meats, esp.) and food rotation have been helpful. Food rotation prevents toxic build up. If you are overweight you need to know those knees that are so painful are absorbing 3x your body weight with every step! If you lose 10 lbs that's taking 30 lbs off each knee!! Reducing stress means knowing what it is that stresses you or what is producing this mind/body reaction. Finding positive intervention for stress boosts your immune sys- tem and gives your body a chance to resist illness. Meditation and visualization are easily learned. Yoga is wonderful for both stress and that gentle movement that is imperative. Do things that make you happy, things you have always wanted to do, like painting, swimming, whatever it is that takes your mind offnon nurturing, worrisome thoughts. It is also important to find friends who are supportive and give positive energy. Talking with those closest to you about the need to sometimes express the pain will give them a chance to be more supportive. These are only a few specific ways to improve the quality of your life if you are suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Once you begin the process by realizing you can make a difference by the choices you make for yourself there will be no turning back. Good Luck...
