6 Thursday. April 17, 1997 Pahmmp Valley Gazette i i II | II II II I Now Pronounce You... Sex scandals, unfortunately, are nothing new. Hardly even news- worthy unless accompanied by some dramatic twist such as has occurred within our own community not that long ago. It is a subject that cuts across all facets of society at one time or another. It has been known to rock the halls of the English Parliament, even our own White House in Washington. At least there are times one could smell the smoke. And you know that where there is smoke there are usually flames. Only history itself will be able to reveal all the truths of "Sex on the Potomac." John Kennedy, Jr. has been most candid recently on national television regarding his father's "extremely close" friendship with the late Marilyn Monroe. Now we have another "dramatic" example of sexual scandal quite close to home. In Las Vegas and "church" related, sad to say. It seems Pastor Joe Cunningham of the Family Worship Center at 370 Wind- mill Lane, Las Vegas has pleaded guilty to seduction and having sex witha teenager. Told the youngster that it would help better prepare her for marriage or some such rubbish. Apparently all in the name of the Deity while counseling her on other personal matters as early as mid 1993 ending with the Cunningham arrest in April of 1996. Originally charged with several counts including molesting a 13- year-old, the reverend Cunningham copped a guilty plea to seducing the 16-year-old in exchange for the other charges being dropped. Clark County District Judge Jeffrey Sobel has as of last month sentenced the cleric to a year in prison "not because Cunningham is a minister," said Sobel, but "because he did some very bad things." Pastor Cunningham will also be supervised for the remainder of his natural days as a sex offender under Nevada Statute Law. The entire scenario has apparently destroyed the church on Wind- mill Lane. The Las Vegas Review Journal indicated on March 26 that "The family worship center has since closed." Bad enough to destroy a life with permanent scars but to destroy an entire church leaves one I I Illl Ill II Illl Ill I shocked with disbelief. This all appears to suggest that other family worship center minis- ters are also out of business. One of Cunningham's associate ministers at "Family" was the Reverend W. C. Dahlquist. Dahlquist, some will remember, was the parson who heard and sealed the vows for the little guy down at the end of Homestead Road, Jim Miltenberger and his bride, the former but now booted out of office Commissioner Shirley Montell, a.k.a., Coiletti. Shirley served two terms as commissioner up in Storey County before her own seduction of the little fella with the elevated cat's paws. The clandestine wedding between the diminutive lfiltenberger and the then commissioner took place on March 25 last year. Just about the time that Dahlquist's associate was putting the moves on his 16-year-old church member for the final time. Making grave mistakes with members of the opposite sex is one of the major downfalls of many otherwise level-headed men. Cunningham is paying his price of a year's freedom plus life supervision. From my vantage point Cunningham has gotten offlight. Had I been the judge, Cunningham would have received the whole book-- plus a swift kick in the rear. One has to wonder about Miltenberger. He has, as of this April date, passed the first year of wedded bliss with the former commissioner. Jimmy might have chosen to have a sunset clause that would have given him his own escape after a year's time. Especially now that Shirley dear is unemployed and not bringing home the big bucks. Not to mention carrying the prestigious title of Commissioner. She learned too late that you couldn't govern Storey County from Jim's poolside near the Las Vegas strip. Oh well, we all create our own fate as another sage once said. And at the least, Jim and Shirley have some excitement to look back on related to their own anniversary date. Just a coincidence I realize, but an ironic one regardless. Don't you think?
