,,Sleepers" is Dream cast
in Nightmare tale
by Barney Basin
Gazette Reviewer ,
"Sleepers" is a M'
nightmare of a story with a '\\;\
dream cast. In spite of some
over long editing this new
video is not going to put you
to sleep, there is something
for everyone. It contains a \\; {
sympathetic Hell's Kitchen
priest, a drunken lawyer,
sadistic guards and a
brilliant young District
Attorney. These characters
are part of a modem day
regaling of the Count of
Monte Cristo, or so the
I
director would have you believe. [
The story is about how a youthful high jinks goes [
out of control and the four pal prank perpetrators are sen
to a boys home where they are tortured, beaten and ]
sexually assaulted by billy clubbing, bullying, guards. [
Years later, as adults, they get their revenge.
l
Kevin Bacon is the slimiest scum slug of the
guards. He does it so well you almost hate to see him get
his just salting in the end.
Robert DeNiro plays the priest. It's the first role,
for a while for DeNiro in which he can't use the "F"
=word. That's what happens when costuming puts the
collar on you. DeNiro turns in a fine performance, but hil
character has to go through a struggle as to whether he
should lie in court to protect two of the boys. The directo
chose not to show this. It was a mistake and would have
added more dimension to the character.
Dustin Hoffman's drunken barrister was done in
Hoffman's usual fine style, but it was a throw away role.
With Hoffman's talent the character should have been
expanded.
Brad Pitt and Jason Patric play two of the four boy:
as adults. Both actors are certainly believable in their
roles, but the characters were more exciting to watch
when they were boys.
This highly intense film might have left the viewer
sleepless in Pahrump if there had been more put into the
supporting characters.
