(702) 727-3711 901 S. Frontage Rd. Pahr- ump SATURN SC2 SPORT COUPE Opposum @ ix.netcom.com General Motors is known more for being a plodding behemoth than a ballet dancer. Somewhere, though, deep in GM's corporate structure, are people who really know how to pirouette and build state-of-the-art cars. It's evidenced by the Saturn division and its recent line-wide overhaul. The polymer-bodied Saturns approach import quality, and in the small ear class, that's high praise. This week's tester is the SC2 Sport Coupe, a well-built vehicle with a suspension other domestics should emulate! From the outside, the foglight-equipped SC2 shows no obvious signs of its newly-stretched-by-three-inches wheelbase. Inside, the front-drive, top-line SC2 offers twin cloth buckets with small side holsters. They're well padded with adequate room, even for large people. The rear bench is adult-usable for moderate trips. The trunk is spacious with a low lifiover height. The dash contains few gauges: control "feel" continues, inexplicably, to leave much to be desired. Storage cub- byholes abound, but there's no front cupholder! Variable ratio power steering, power disc/drnm brakes (antilock 4-wheel discs with Traetion Control are a worthwhile $695 option), tilt wheel, dual airbags, five-mile-per-hour bumpers, daytime running lights, 1,000 pounds of towing capacity, and much more, are standard. Under the hood, the SC2 uses an extremely noisy (but quieter for "97) 1.9 liter, 124 HP, fuel-injected aluminum "4" with four valves per cylinder. It moves this 2,415- pound vehicle from 0-60 in 10 seconds (factory claim: 9.6), near the class average. Fuel economy on regular unleaded was observed at 21 city and 32 highway (EPA 24/34), better than par for the genre. The $15,100 base price SC2's transmission was a 4- speed automatic with lockup torque converter. It shifted well. Turning to ride, the SC'2 surprised with pleasantness and competence. It's not soft, but it's almost as compliant as its toughest import rivals. Road irregularities are definitely taken in stride! Handling rates almost as high. The suspen- sloth a 4-wheel independent type, keeps the body fairy level in corners. The tires, all-season radials, are adequate but not up to this vehicle's high standards. Nimbleness isn't helped by its near 38-foot turning circle, a sub-par figure. Braking distances were commendably short. Quality control was good and rates near the imports. Be aware Saturn offers a superior warranty, too. The SC-'2 is priced aggressively and performs well. Saturn vehicles even have solid driving "feel," a subjective but real sensation. Assuming GM continues to refine its newest division, they could eventually compete for the small ear market quality crown!. MOBILE HOME LOTS FOR SALE Repo Land. So, whisk away the winter doldrums for good and make these whimsical Easter egg favors with your family. Just about all you need are some eggshells, bright tissue paper, and your children's creativity. Best of all, come Easter morning, friends and family will anticipate cracking open these dazzling eggs because there's a special surprise inside each one! To get started, save your eggshells. When a recipe calls for eggs, carefully crack the eggs in hall empty the contents for the recipe and rinse out the matching egg shells with soap and water. Set them aside to dry thoroughly making sure you keep the pairs together. Place a small charm, candy or a strip of paper with a say- ing, poem or kind thought inside one of the halves of each eggshell pair. Now it's time to "put Humpty together again!" Find the matching eggshell half and tape or glue the two pieces together. Don't worry if there are gaps where small pieces of the shell may have broken. Brush white household glue one section at a time on the eggshell and place small squares of cut tissue paper on the glue. Overlap the tissue squares as you cover the entire egg including the open gaps, if there are any. Paint a final coat of glue over the tissue-covered egg. Let dry. The glue will become invisible, revealing a colorful mosaic of tissue squares. If an egg is designated for a particular person, tie a thin ribbon around the egg and attach a small name tag. Arrange your festive eggs in an Easter basket and enjoy them as a table centerpiece this month. On Easter morning, crack open the eggs to reveal the surprises! $2g,S00 16 10 AC PARCELS IN FAST GROWING AMARGOSA, OWC $52,500 3/2 FIREPLACE, CATHEDRAL CEILINGS, FENCED, TREES $8S,000 10 YR.
