Twenty-four Inyo County employess take
advantage of the "Golden Hanshake."
INDEPENDENCE - March 4. 1997 was a "Golden Day"
for twenty-tour Inyo County employees. The County Board
of Supervisors voted qualified personnnel an additional four
years of serve for retiring before June 29.
Update - March 11, 1997. The "Golden Day" has now be-
come the "Black Day"." After voting to give qualified
county employees the "'Golden Handshake" the Board of
Supervisors will note today to rescind the March 4. 1997
resolution due to gross errors in the original resolution. The
board hopefully will have the bugs worked out in the next
two weeks and again allowing retires to continue with re-
tirement plans.
Zona McCracken
Zona McCracken, Social Worker l 1 l, brought to Inyo
County a vaired background in social services. Staring in
1961 she starated with Inyo County working in Indepen-
dence. Leaving Inyo County for Riverside County in 1984
and retired in 1988 from Riverside County. Zona had ex-
pressed to Dr. Susan Holgae, Director of Health and Hu-
man Services for Inyou County, that she would like to work
out in the desert when a position became availabe. Febru-
ary 1991, Zona was contacted to take on the job of Social
Worker in Tecopa. From the Tecopa office she w uld man-
age many varied social progams in mental health, proba-
tion, AA and health and welfare. She and her husband will
continue raising and showing their award winning Paints
and Quarter horses from their ranch in Pahrump.
Winnie Miller arrived at Tecopa Hot Springs County Park
with her husband in July 1970. They hired Winnie as a
bookkeeper and her husband, since deceased, was the main-
tenance man. Winnie came here from Oakland, California
where she was an audiator/cashier for AGE and the Bank
of America in the bay area. At the county park she has
worked at every job available and then some. During the
twenty-seven years living at Tecopa Hot Springs, Winnie

has been the ambulance driver, fire department engineer,
and all around person when somec;ne needed help. In 1973
Amargosa Valley Recreation Association named her Citi-
zen of the Year. She is now on the AVRA board, Winnie
has no final retirement plans at this time, she said "wher-
ever the flip of the coin lands is where she might land."
AI Orr hangs up his badge after thirty-eight years in law
enforcement. Beginning his career with Los Angeles Po-
lice Department as a motor officer. Leaving LAPD after
nine years, he joined the Breezy Point Police Department
in Minnesota, serving in all positions for eleven years. Re-
turning to California's Yuba County as deputy sheriff. With
two years service in Yuba County AI joined the Inyo County
Sheriff's Department where he has spent his last twelve
years. They assigned him tot he Shoshone-Tecopa area for
seven years as a Resident Deputy Sheriff. Atand wife Judy
have moved their home base to Fallon, Nevada but plans
are to spend the winters in this area.
With the retirement of AI, Winnie and Zona the area has
lost a priplet that were always there to help. Going beyone
their county job descriptions to help others and make this a
better place to live.
