Adversary and concern for asthmatic and allergy patients
Warning Sulfites in canne l tuna prompts hot line
Based on an advisory from the Federal Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) Asthma patients
whose disease is triggered by sulfites and any-
one allergic to preservatives should not eat cer-
tain types of canned tuna, FDA warned this
week.
Tuna manufacturers discovered that sulfites
were inadvertently added to about a third of the
canned tuna sold in the United States. Sulfite-
sensitive people can suffer life-threatening re-

contain the sulfites, as well as several brands of
light tuna.
The food industry could not yet name all the
suspect light tuna by brand name yesterday, al-
though it said some cases of BumbleBee's coral
and Royal Reef brands contained sulfites. It set
at 727-7401 or 727-4778.

about 5 percent of the nation's estimated 10 mil-
lion to 16 million asthma patients are sensitive
to the preservatives, as are a small number of
healthy people
