Bar, pod tables, dart Dy RV pink- except for Monday, Household Help by John Amantea ., i I I What really makes a sofa a success _ comfortable and durable _ is the inside story. How it's constructed. The quality of the frame, springs, cushions, materials and fill- ing, and how they're all put together. From the Hardwood Manufacturers Associatirn, a national trade group, here are some pointers on what to look for when shopping for upholstered furniture. You can get these and other free decorating ideas by calling the association toll-free at 1-800-373-WOOD. Strength is what you're looking for in the frame. The sofa should feel heavy when you lift it; in a quality piece, you shouldn't hear any creaking sounds. High-quality upholstered furniture frames are made of kiln-dried solid hardwoods such as oak, cherry, maple and poplar. Be sure to find out if the frame instead is made of plywood, strand board, fiberboard, particleboard, steel or plastic. Just as you would look underneath the hood of a car, check out the bottom of the sofa. The best have legs that are part of the frame. Screwed-on legs are a dead giveaway of poor construction. Frames can be assembled with screws, dowels, nails, staples and glue. Top-quality furniture has reinforcement blocks which have been screwed and glued for added strength. Many upholstered pieces feature exposed wood legs or arms. Exposed frames are becoming increasingly frequent in casual styles as futons and slack-cushioned furniture grow in popularity. When purchasing an exposed wood frame, note your color and grain options, as well as the quality of the stain and finish. High-quality coil or cone springs are closely tied togeth- er to provide comfort and usually are supported with syn- thetic webbing. "Eight-way, hand-tied coiled spring" means each spring is attached by hand with knotted twine to the eight surrounding springs and to the webbing under- neath them. This assures the springs move independently but interact smoothly. Less expensive couches use fewer springs, typically tied only six ways, possibly making for uneven support and a greater tendency to break apart. The best way to select a sofa is to take it for a test drive. Sit on it and bounce up and down lightly. Loud creaks or thumps may mean the springs are hitting the frame. Cushions can be firm and solid, or soft and pliant. However, no matter what your preference, the cushions should always offer you .,-,,'--t "Maximum Risk" is Maximum Mayhem By Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer Never, but never, invite Jean " \\;" Claude Van Daum to visit your city, unless your fair berg has already applied for disaster re- fief, because before he leaves \\; [ it's going to need it. In his latest opus of pain, "Maximum Risk," he creates such a cauldron of carnage, in Nice that it had to move to somewhere in the south of Spain to rebuild, and New York { . City hadn't witness such mis- haps since monkey madness was wrecked on it by "King Kong." Somewhere in the shadows of Tokyo there is a flying reptile that looks on approvingly. As in any J.C.V.D. film there is plenty of action. There are car chases, and foot chases, and fist fights, gun fights, and knife fights, we have J.C.V.D. fighting in the streets, fighting in America, fight- ing in France and fighting in his underpants. Actually it was not J.C.V.D. in his B.V.D.s but rather a bath towel,it's just that when he was surrounded by a bunch of beefy Bolshevik types, his towel was a lot shorter then anyone else. In the middle of all this bloodshed this is still time for a love scene. Actually it is more of a lust scene. Wouldn't want to do .anything to jeopardize the "R" rating. But the language is fairly clean. Yes there is a story in this film but don't worry it doesn't get in the way of the action. This film will not disappoint Van Daum fans. When you rent one of his films you expect a lot of action and 'The Muscles from BrUssels" beats all the bad guys and gets real close to at least one naked beauty. To mention any of the other embers would he a waste of time, because the rest look like they /f. t were cast out of the pic books of S.A.G /'," heavys. There are no others known -- name. Could he Jean Claude planned it that away. Hil My name is Sparky and please I have only a few days left on this good old plannet. My folks lost me and I really need a loving family.
