"Courage Under
Fire" a Thinking
Man's
War
by Barney Basin I\\; I
Gazette Reviewer
"Courage Under Fire." is a
scat')' fihn. It makes you think,
an emotion not often served to
video viewers.
Combat has always been an
area rich in the fabric that tales
are woven from. To make this flick pertinent to modern day
viewers it is set against the backdrop of our most recent
military action, the Gulf War.
Denzel Washington portrays a tank commander, who un-
der the confusion of combat fires upon one of his own units.
Being haunted by this friendly fire phantom he is returned
stateside, where he is ordered to spearhead an investigation
into the death of Meg Ryan, a med-evact Captain who could
he the first woman candidate to receive the Medal of Honor.
The top brass wants her to get the medal as does the White
House as voiced by Bronson Pinchot in the role of a wily
White House weasel. Hearing conflicting testimonies, Wash-
. ington sets out to learn the truth, and banish his own ban-
shee in the process.
This is an excellent production with a very cohesive cast.
Each performer crafted their character to fit in this produc5
tion like a smooth jigsaw puzzle. One performer who fit in
so well that he appears to be almost overlooked is Lou Dia-
mond Phillips. He has defi-
nitely graduated from the
• "Young Guns" and gone on
[( \\;\ \\; / to better and meatier, roles.
//,. k)''/ The film carries an R rating
_. because it deals with war where
/ ,/('-(! death
J and violence in always brutal.
I For a worthwhile evening watch
