Pahrump's Passing Paraae

PAHRUMP - The names and deeds of Gerald "'Gerry"
Mock and Robert "Good Ole Bob" Perry were frequent visi-
tors over the years to the pages of the Gazette. In a very real
sense both of these modern-
day Pahrump pioneers con-
tributed greatly to the living
history of this big verdant
valley.
Both, like the Athenians of
Ancient Greece, lef t this a
far better place than it was
when they first came to the
south county. Having passed
within days of each other on
their final journey, it's hard
to put one before the other
except in a proper - alpha-
betic and chronologic ordery
they would allow - that's the
only way either of them
would have possibly com-
promised on the proper or-
der of listing.
GERALD '"GERRY"
Mock, 69, died Friday, Feb-
ruary 28. He was the first of
this dynamic duo of Pahr-
ump pioneers to leave us on
his journey to eternity. He
left a legacy of tireless dedi-
cation to the positive
progress of his chopsen coin-
Gerald Mock
Robert Perry "Good 'OI Bob" of Pahrump, NV,
owner of the Good 'Oi Bob's Storage units on Lesie
and Mesquite
ti)r years to get the town to properly name "Dutch Ford Road"
for of the early fimnders and helped deliver Nye and
Esmerala Counties in support of the first grass roots presi-
dential campaign for Ross
Perot. A Navy and Marine
Corps. veteran of World War
II and the Korean Conflict,
the retired teamster from the
Test Site may have been short
in stature, but that never
stopped him for fighting for
the causes he believed, and
we're sorry to see him go.
ROBERT, OR AS HE
PEFERRED, "GOOD OL
BOB" PERRY will probably
be embarrased by all the
good things the people of
Pahrump will say about him
now that he's gone. For a
man who spent the major part
of his life doing good for oth-
ers, "Good Ol Bob," he
didn't like the formality of
being called by his formal
name and delighted in being
as bad as the his handle
would permit. A former
mortgage banker before
moving to the valley, the
baddest good guy around
who claimed he served as an
inspiration |br the Terrible
Herbst slogan. In true pio-
neering spirit, he devoted himself to bringing local residents
city-types services not normally available in the country.
While not genrally know, he was an active ham radio opera-
tor who saved many stranded adwellers who knew their res-
cuer only by his call letters, N6CAZ. I will never forget the
time he came to our aid when our old Pontiac broke down
on an isolated section of Hwy. 178 between Shoshone Death
Valley Junction. N6CAZ responded to a call for help from
an 18-wheeler loaded to the brim with low-level wastes on
his way to the old USEgology dump in Beatty who had
stopped to help. Next time we saw Ole Bob in Pahrump
after we returned, we wanted to thank him, which he, of
course, attempted to brush off and tried to sell us one of his
latest advetising specialities. Things you tend to forget, but
then rember at time like this.
More lormal and traditional obituaries appear elsewhere
in this edition but we had to say these very personal
rememberances, along with our since condolences to their
survivors.
