28 Thursday, February 27, 1997 Pahrump Valley Gazette Helicopter cont. f ,m page 1 scene and rescue workers had to send in a Snowcat, a tracked vehicle borrowed from the Federal Aviation Administra- tion, to transport the three injured to a location where they could be safely flown to the medical center. KXPT operations manager Richard Reed aid Liles and Roy had flown to the site to perform some maintenance work at the site. The crashed aircraft left Las Vegas Executive Air Termi- nal at McCarran International Airport. The helicopter crashed when it was about to return to Las Vegas from Mount Potosi, about a 15 minute flight. Radio communication between rescuers and a command post in the tiny town of Goodsprings on the southwestern side of the mountain confirmed the difficulties confronting the rescue team as they tried to reach the men on the moun- tain. Snow drifts prevented rescue vehicles from reaching the crash scene. One vehicle carried emergency personnel close to the site before getting stuck in the snow. Cameron said, "We would have gotten up there really last but the Bronco got stuck down to the axles in the rug- ged terrain. We used that vehicle to shuttle personnel and used the Snowcat to shuttle the patients." Dr. Joe Hect was dropped from a helicopter to assist the injured men along with one officer to cover and stabilize the injured. The same Mount Potosi area was the scene of a fatal air- liner crash during World War II that claimed the life of fa- mous actress Carole, wife of actor Clark Gable, and all pas- sengers aboard. The tiny rural town of Goodsprings also served as a command post during that ill-fated rescue at- tempt.
