,...qt ,r 4 lnutsd@, Febay 27, i997 Pahrump Valley Gazette Bev writes her last "30" By C J. Prime Former Gazette editor and community activist Beverley J. Robinson, who died on February 20 at the age of 63, was remembered Tuesday at services at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church for her dedication to her family and to liter- ary pursuits. "The only thing that surpassed her love of books was her love |or people," said Tim Hafen, the former state assemblyman and longtime local rancher, who delivered the eulogy. Her husband of 25 years, George, surrounded by their chil- dren and grandchildren on Monday, spoke of his love for Bev and how he already missed her. Through tears, he told me he was "just trying to get through tomorrow," surviving on hugs and love from family and friends. But he was determined to find a way to carry on, in order to honor her. I remember George's visits to the Gazette's offices in 1995, 1991 portrait of Beverley R inson, which she tol stepdaughter Rosanne Sticher she liked because it her 'look skinny'. Bev wouldn't mind this being her - she always said the problem with people is the)' take themselves too seriously. they spotted each other, the Robinsons' faces would light up. They had a closeness I've rarely seen between couples. Bev had been fighting illness lbr some time, and frequently she didn't feel well. Even so, she never complained; her con- cern was always tbr George. "She really loved writing tot the Gazette," George told me. "Sometimes she enjoyed the editor's job, too," he recalled, but the stress was pretty high. Originally hired as a secretary and freelance writer, Bev became a reporter and then the paper's editor. A native of California, she had previously worked as assistant editor of the Kern Valley newspaper. But journalism was only one of Bev's passions. During the seven years she lived in Pahrump, she took on active roles with the Community Library and Friends of the Library and served as a tutor for the Pahrump Literacy Council; she was also a member of the Oasis Writers Guild, not to mention American Mensa. In addition, she served on the Pahrump Cemetery Board and as at one time was secretary of the Ser- vice Assistance Program. In 1994, she made an unsuccess- ful run for county treasurer. She was a member of the Catholic Church. Somehow, Bev still found time to con- tinue studying literature, and, of course, for her children and grandchildren. At the service, Hafen re- counted three of Bev's favor- ite sayings: "Skinny cooks can't be trusted;" "Life is un- certain, so eat dessert first;" and "Before going to bed, give all your troubles to God -- He is going to be up all night any- way." Bev used to offer a version of that last one, along with a wink, when it got particularly stressful at the Gazette: Re- minding me to give my troubles to God, she might add that, "after all, they'll be wrap- ping fish with it [the paper] next week." Although Bev was my boss, we became instant fl'iends. I still expect to see her "power walking" down Pahrump Valley Blvd., smiling and waving to people as she went. I'm going to miss her.
