Happy hour, Monday - Friday, 5 - 7 I III I By Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer A similar scenario is the storyline to "Last Man Standing." In this film we have a dingy desert town, populated by a pod of putrid persons, with law and order being carried out by a swindling swaggering sheriff. In rides a man with no name, well he claims his name is John Smith but its the same as no name. Mr. Smith cleans up the town with blazing bullets and bleeding bodies, and then rides off in the sunset. Sound familiar? No, it's not referring to Pahrump. This is the basic story to Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns. There are no good guys, so you kill every- one. Even if it sounds like it, this isn't a western. It's a gangster film also penned by theater wags as an East- ern. Only these easterners are in the west because it's easier to get illegal booze from Mexico in the West. This flick is a prime example of overkill. There are so many bodies lying around the scenery, that the stuntmen should only have received half pay for ly- ing down on the job so much. What should have been an "R" rating due to blood and gore became an "R" due a cord of corpses. Of course the "R" could have been due to the foot- age of Bruce Willis's naked rump. Bruce Willis plays the nameless stranger. His per- formance was even, but then, how difficult is it to talk in monotone and shoot everything that moves? Bruce Dem portrays the less than lawful sheriff. This is a character that Dem has perfected and his portrayal here is one more in a long list of no-goodniks. Actu- ally, ever since Dem shot John Wayne in the movie "Cowboys," his fate has been that of the perpetual bad guy. There is one important question the film leaves un- answered. Were all gangstcxs bad shots? How else could Willis take on odds of 50 to one and still be "The Last Man.StandingT' p.m. - all dnnks $1. except for top shelf.
