"The Fan" not same old sports story by Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer Who said there is a saneness in sports stories? Of course the point could be made that this is not a sports film, but the tale of the fan, becoming the fanatic, the sane, becoming insane, set against a sports background. Gil Renard, portrayed by Robert DeNiro, is not a player, he is "The Fan," This film is not about winning and losing, it's about control. When Wesley Snipes as Giant outfielder Bobby Rayburn, states that he stopped caring about the game, DeNiro puts the care back in, by forcing Snipes to play for something he cares about, the life of his son. The humanness in his character makes it easier to believe in DeNiro's lack of same. The emotional ping-pong game between these two fine actors is what makes this film. Most interesting of the supporting cast is Ellen Barkin as a ball-busting, blonde bimbo babe with a sports talk show. There is zero sex in this film, and the violence is so well choreographed that it could have been a ballet. The R rating is for the over use of a certain four letter word. Once may be O.K. for shock value, twice may be cool but when used as much as it is in this film it becomes boring. It's hard to believe that the acronym, for unlawful carnal knowledge, is the only adjective known by American adults. In spite of this, "The Fan" is a tense, taunt thriller worth watching.
