Kingpin takes the laughs by Barney Basin Gazette Reviewer "Kingpin,"{PG-13,} is a film that atdresses itself to the burning questions of the day. Questions like; can a man spend seventeen years in the gutter and still find re- demption on the alley? Can an Amish boy find favor and finance the family farm with funds from Reno? Why didn't Bill Murray get any bill- ing for his role in the film? And, doesn't Randy Quaid in drag look like Phyllis Diller? All of these ques- tions will be answered as "Kingpin" takes you for a raunchy, raucous, rock & roll ride, that roars over every gag in sight. The story is not im- portant in this film, nor are the actors. What is important is how many laughs can be packed in. Nothing is sacred, so everything is fodder for the directors laugh cannon. If you are under the preconceived notion that this film is about bowling you are wrong. What this film is about is hustle and con, a chance to separate the players from their chips. Bowling is just the sport used to work the cons. Actually this video does as much for bowling as "Custer's Last Stand" did for the Native American welfare pro- gram. One might compare thi film to Paul Newman's classic "The Hustler," with Woody Harrelson as the loser, out to prove he's a winner by striking out in I "Actually this video does as much for bowling as "Custer's Last Stand" did for the Native American welfare program " that last big game up there, in that golden city of ...... Reno? It's not that deep, it's not even shallow, the whole purposes of this film is to provide the audience with as many way to laugh as possible. There is no question, this was masterfully accom- plished. Woody Harrelson once again showed his timing for comedy, in the role of the loser Roy Munson, out for his redeeming last big score. Randy Quaid as the innocent Amish bowling whiz, turned in a non-stop laugh- filled performance. Judge for yourself in the topless bar scene whom Quaid looks like Ms. Diller would get you even money. Venessa Angel may not be a sight gag but she is certainly a sight, and the scene where she stands, in a mini skirt over the hot air jets on the alley hand dryers, in order to distract the other male bowlers is certainly a sight not to be forgotten. Bill Murray's nemesis character starts this show off as slime and stays so all the way through. It's classic Murray but plays well with the rest of this craziness. For enter- tainment that takes no thought and a lot of laughs its "King- pin." II g. Ki%in 6. Ghain, olion ild 7. Tin 6 , Ti to Kill . T lock Isl of Dr. IVIor q.
